SWCA 2019 Delays & Interruptions
2
Divisions 1-3 Start time 1.00 pm 2h 55m per innings
Tea interval 30 minutes Finish time 7.20 pm Visiting captain gets choice of ball Solo umpire always at the bowler’s end Fielding Circles in all 3 divisions Change of start and finish time for Call off window for clubs by agreement is now 09:30 to 11:00
3
Divisions 1-3 50 overs per side No transfer of unused overs
Declaration allowed Maximum 10 overs (or one-fifth) per bowler DLS to work out revised targets Minimum 20 overs for DLS result Declaring side is treated as having used all the overs available to it for DLS purposes and to be all out for bonus point purposes. Bowling allocation recalculated every time there’s a reduction. 1 extra over per bowler if the sum produces a fraction. Example: 43 over match means 2 can bowl 8 and 3 can bowl 9.
4
DLS Not needed for delayed starts
Only required if there is an interruption after the start AND a reduction in overs for either side
5
DLS terminology Target = the score to win
Par Score = score which would result in a tie if the match was abandoned at that point The Par Score for the end of the over in progress should be displayed on the scoreboard NB: The Par Score displayed is the one for the end of the over in progress. If a match is abandoned part way through an over, an exact Target for that delivery needs to be calculated to confirm the result.
6
Finishing time The finishing time is 7.20 pm
If there’s an interruption, work out how much playing time is left Allow for tea and/or 10 mins between innings One table to work out overs + time Try and equalise the number of overs If Team A have already had more than half the available overs, they do not resume even if their innings ended halfway through an over. Team B’s innings starts immediately.
7
General Principles If there’s a delay or an interruption, set a new start or re-start time which allows time for: Doing the sums including any DLS calculations Removal of covers and pitch preparation Warming up A resumption time needs to be set so you can do the “time left” calculation.
8
General Principles If you go off part way through an over that over has to be finished when you resume Interruption after 15.4 overs Calculation that innings is reduced to 36 overs 20.2 overs to come on resumption
9
Delayed start If the delay before the start means that 60 overs cannot be bowled the game does not start Latest start time is 3.20pm, or 3.40pm if tea has been taken before the start.
10
Example #1 The start is delayed by poor weather and you decide to commence play at 3.00pm Time left is 4h 20m less 30 mins = 3h 50m 33 overs per side - 1h 55m each innings Tea is at 3.00pm + 1h 55m = 4.55pm 2nd Innings starts 5.25pm & ends 7.20pm Just short of 3h 51m for 66 but round up so equal numbers of overs are available.
11
Example #2 The match starts on time but is interrupted after 19 overs at 2.05 pm You decide to restart at 3.15 pm DLS needed as Team A will lose overs Time left is 4h 05m – 30m = 3h 35m Time for 62 more overs Not down to the 61 over time yet so allow 62. See below for DLS
12
Example #2 19 overs already bowled so the match is 81 overs in length
Round up to 82 and ÷2 = 41 overs each Team A receive another 22 overs They take 1h 17m Tea is at 4.32pm. Play resumes at 5.02 pm 41 overs take 2h 23m Play ends 7.25 pm Has to be an even number of overs!!
13
Early tea effect… If you took tea during the interruption you’ve saved 20 minutes. In this example playing time left is 3h 55m Time for 68 more overs You’ve had 19 overs so match is 87 overs Round up to 88÷2 = 44 overs per side Was 4h 05m less 30 minutes for tea. Now 4h 05m less 10 minutes so 3 more overs each.
14
Early tea effect… Team A have 44-19 = 25 overs left
25 overs = 1h 27 mins so interval at 4.42pm Resume at 4.52pm 44 overs take 2h 34m Close of play is 7.26pm 10 minute break
15
Interruptions in 1st innings…
Work out the time left to 7.20 pm less 30 minutes for the interval Remember that if you take tea during the interruption you only deduct 10 minutes From the Table find how many overs can be bowled in the time
16
Interruptions in 1st innings…
Add back the overs already bowled Divide by two to find the overs for each side. (Round up if an odd number) Deduct the overs received by Team A Find the time for the rest of Team A’s overs from the Table
17
Interruptions in 1st innings…
Use that time to find the 1st innings end time Check the time for all the overs for Team B Confirm the finishing time, which should be between 7.20pm and 7.26pm Repeat for further interruptions Correct finishing time is a check that you’ve done the sums correctly. If it’s 7.27pm you’ve got one over each too many – 3.5 x 2 = 7. If it’s before 7.20 pm you need to add an over each.
18
Your turn The match starts on time. After 50 minutes and 16 overs you go off for rain You decide to resume at 3.20 pm Tea is still between innings How many overs each? When is tea? What is the scheduled finishing time?
19
Your turn Playing time left is 4h 00m – 30 = 3h 30m
Time for 60 more overs 60+16 = 76÷2 = 38 overs each Team A have 38 – 16 = 22 more overs Tea is at 4.37pm. Resume at 5.07 pm 38 overs = 2h 13m so end is 7.20 pm All theses are notional timings. Having set the match length you stick to it. Don’t adjust because you’re going too quickly or too slowly. Remind captains for over rate purposes.
20
Interruptions in 2nd innings
Once Team A’s innings has been completed, the match must be allowed to run its course If the 2nd innings is delayed or interrupted use the same time left method No allowance for tea or change of innings!!
21
Interruptions in 2nd innings
If Team B’s innings is reduced below 20 overs, the DLS target remains at the 20 over figure Unless Team B pass the target or are all out in their fewer than 20 overs, the match is treated as abandoned with 4 points each + bonus points as appropriate
22
Example The match starts at full length
No interruptions in the 1st innings The 2nd innings starts on time (4.25 pm) After 12 overs, the rain falls and at 4.55pm you leave the field You decide to resume at 5.50pm
23
Example DLS will be required as an innings has been reduced after the match has started Time left is 1h 31m = time for 26 overs Play resumes at 5.50pm Play ends at 7.21pm Team B receive = 38 overs DLS below
24
Your turn #2 1st innings is uninterrupted
2nd innings starts on time at 4.25 pm At 4.40 pm after 4.3 overs you go off for 15 minutes At 6.00pm, after 23 overs in total have been bowled, you go off again. You decide to resume at 6.45 pm Calculate the overs and the finishing time 2 calculations (and 2 DLS sums).
25
Your turn #2 Time left after 1st interruption is 2h 25m
Table says time for 42 more overs (2h 27m) Finish the current over as well = 47 overs Finish time is 7.22pm You’ve had 4.3 overs and there are 3 balls left in that over. Bowl that then 42 more.
26
Your turn #2 Time left after 2nd interruption is 35m
Table says time for 10 more overs Finish time is 7.20pm Innings is = 33 overs in total Note that even though the 1st interruption altered the finishing time to 7.22 pm you still use 7.20 pm to work out time left for the second interruption.
27
DLS applied to the examples above
27
28
League DLS Protocol Home team required to have either
Laptop capable of running the DLS 2.0 program or Be using Play-cricket Scorer Pro or Total Cricket Scorer programs which display the Par score End of current over Par score to be displayed on the scoreboard If neither available, use play-cricket scorer phone app as the fallback
29
League DLS Protocol Onus on the Home team to have the resources available to calculate Ideally, DLS is a matter for scorers not umpires Phone App is last resort Report home teams for non-compliance
30
League DLS Protocol Phone App is last resort
The yellow “?” on the phone app takes you to the Help file if you get stuck Click on “Back” at top left to return to your calculation
31
