3 Making Connections Per Group, MUST make 1 connection:
THEME – Civilization vs. Savagery; Loss of Innocence; Innate Human Evil ALLEGORY – Humanity? Society? World? (what lesson is author teaching?) SYMBOL – how does your content support/reflect symbolism in the story?

4 Definition of Allegory
ALLEGORY: “A story in which people, things and actions represent an idea or generalization about life; allegories often have a strong moral lesson. “ Often, characters in allegories personify some abstract quality = SYMBOLIC.

5 Political Allegory

6 How Can You Prove This? Lord of the Flies shows the world at the brink of atomic destruction.  The novel serves as a warning to the leaders of the world. How does YOUR Group’s Symbol support this message?

7 Sample Response: the Conch
“The conch can be used to support the political allegory of the story because it’s used as a symbol of power and authority. In a world on the brink of atomic destruction, people are afraid of the threat and their inability to control or protect themselves against it. When this happens, people generally look to their leaders – authority – who can offer assurances to them, create policies or procedures – ‘rules’ – that will give them the security they’re looking for. Ralph’s use of the conch does this for the boys on the island…”

8 Text Support “We have to have rules” “Anyone with the conch can speak”
“He has the conch! Let him speak!” “We can use it to call meetings…” “Blow it, Ralph, they’ll come…” “Because rules are all we have!”

9 Psychological Allegory

10 How Can You Prove This? Moral/Social Allegory – how people work together or coexist Is humanity basically good or evil? Lord of the Flies shows the changes in behavior that occur when social/cultural customs breakdown or are removed. The characters personify the different aspects of the human psyche: the id, the super ego, and the ego – and human ability to control these (or not!).

11 Religious Allegory

12 How Can You Prove This? It was a perfect island with good food, good weather and good water (a paradise = Garden of Eden). Jack and Ralph are becoming like Cain and Abel The boy with the birthmark is killed when the fire gets out of control; the parachutist – killed in act of war (like Adam/Eve disobeying God’s strict orders) Simon says “As if this wasn’t a good island…” The boys’ behavior changes are linked to the environment and the pressure to survive, which highlights human imperfection in an imperfect world.
