The Electrophysiologic Effects of Acute Mitral Regurgitation in a Canine Model
Christopher P. Lawrance, MD, Matthew C. Henn, MD, Jacob R. Miller, MD, Michael A. Kopek, MD, Andrew J. Zhang, BA, Richard B. Schuessler, PhD, Ralph J. Damiano, MD  The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  Volume 103, Issue 4, Pages (April 2017) DOI: /j.athoracsur Copyright © 2017 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

Fig 1 The atrioventricular shunt consisted of woven collagen-embedded polyester and a venous cannula. The shorter venous cannula (left side) was placed into the left atrium at the right superior pulmonary venous confluence. The longer perforated venous cannula (right side) was placed into the left ventricular apex. To prevent kinks, a coiled piece of cardiopulmonary bypass tubing was used for radial support. 3 Fig 2 Representative echocardiograms. (a) The left atrium diameter of 3.21 cm is measured at baseline. (b) Shunt open with Doppler. (c) Shunt velocity at the atrial cannula. (d) Enlargement of the left atrium diameter to 3.83 cm after shunt opening. 4 Fig 3 Minimum and maximum left atrial and right atrial pressures during baseline, while the shunt was open, and after shunt closure. The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  , DOI: ( /j.athoracsur ) Copyright © 2017 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

Fig 4 Left atrium and right atrium (a) volumes and (b) diameters during baseline, while the shunt was open, and after shunt closure. The Annals of Thoracic Surgery  , DOI: ( /j.athoracsur ) Copyright © 2017 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Terms and Conditions

Fig 5 Activation sequence maps of the atria viewed posteriorly. The atria were paced at 300 ms cycle length from the right atrial appendage. The total activation time (TAT) and corresponding left atrial (LA) volumes are shown during control (left panel) with the shunt closed, (center panel) with the shunt opened, and (right panel) with the shunt closed. Each activation map was constructed using 250 electrodes recorded simultaneously.
