After the War

Once in power, Hitler took away the rights of the Jews and eventually forced them into secret concentration camps.

Most people did not know about these camps until after the Allies invaded Germany and Poland.

Six million Jews were killed, four million others, these are pictures of their shoes, eyeglasses, and wedding rings confiscated by the SS troops.

Those who did not go to their immediate death, went to "slow death" – the slave labor camps where many starved or died of illness.

After WWII much of Europe was in ruins.
-After WWI Germany had been treated harshly which helped lead to the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party. -The Allies didn’t want anything like that to happen again. -This time the Allied forces will work together to help rebuild Europe including Germany.

After the war ended Germany remained occupied by the four main Allied nations.

Soviet leader Josef Stalin wanted the areas the Soviets had occupied to be communist like the USSR-this will lead to other problems.

Roosevelt created the United Nations to replace the League of Nations which was not working.

The UN began with 51 member nations and consists of 193 member nations today.
The UN in 1945 The UN today

Human rights had been violated by many during WWII, but especially by the Nazis.
The UN created a commission to define the rights all humans should have. Freedom of speech, freedom of belief, freedom from fear, and freedom from want.

The UN has not prevented all wars, but it has settled some conflicts.
