1 Hospitality, a neglected command
Love -of-strangers; fond of guests; generous to guests. Congregational Theme: Daily Disciples: Good Works

2 ISBE – Hospitality is regarded as a right by the traveler, to whom it never occurs to thank his host as if for a favor. And hospitality is granted as a duty by the host, who himself may very soon be dependent on someone else’s hospitality.

3 ISBE – The traveler is made the literal master of the house during his stay; his host will perform for him the most servile offices, & will not even sit in his presence without express request. The host is in duty bound to defend his guest against all comers & to lay aside any personal hatred --the murderer of father is safe as the guest of the son.

4 Laws & Examples Lev 19:33-34 – And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. 34 The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, & you shall love him as yourself (cf. vs. 19); for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

5 Laws & Examples Lev 25:23-27 – The land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is Mine; for you are strangers & sojourners with Me. 24 And in all the land of your possession you shall grant redemption of the land.

6 Laws & Examples Exo 2:20 (Reuel) – So he said to his daughters, “And where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” Judges 13:15 (Samson’s father) – Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, “Please let us detain You, & we will prepare a young goat for You.”

7 Laws & Examples Genesis 18:1-8 – Abraham Genesis 19:1-3 – Lot
Job 31:32 – “But no sojourner had to lodge in the street, for I have opened my doors to the traveler.”
