Although T-cell priming during the tolerant phase of CHB is not thought to occur, Kennedy et al3 demonstrate a clear distinction between the presence of HBV-specific T cells (dashed red) and actual control of viral replication (solid red). This distinction is most exaggerated in younger patients. Potential mechanisms that might contribute to a ‘quiescent’ state of the newly discovered T-cell responses in vivo are highlighted.
