2 Patriot Leaders

3 Ethan Allen – Leader of Vermont’s “Green Mountain Boys, ” led an attack on Fort Ticonderoga, seizing cannons, gunpowder, and other ammunition.

4 George Washington; Commander in Chief of the Continental Army and considered America’s most able commander. Won the battle of Trenton and was instrumental to the victory at Yorktown.

5 Colonel William Prescott – Led American troops during the Battle of Bunker Hill

6 Benedict Arnold – successfully led Patriot troops against Burgoyne and St Leger in New York but later joined the British and led their troops at Richmond.

7 Horatio Gates’ primary contribution to the Revolution occurred at the Battle of Saratoga, where he was given credit (mostly due to his own battle reports and field dispatches) for the victory. Gate’s “stealing thunder” was one of the main reasons for Benedict Arnold’s treachery!

8 Marquis de Lafayette – Helped the Patriots at Brandywine and at Yorktown, becoming a trusted friend and ally of George Washington. He was instrumental in gaining French aid to the patriot cause.

9 Captain John Paul Jones – Led the American Naval effort; captured the powerful British warship Serapis on the North Sea.

10 Nathaneal Greene took command of the Continental Army of the South in He was considered the best Continental leader other than Washington. (pg. 192)

11 General Daniel Morgan – Led the Patriot victory at Cowpens, South Carolina with a clever tactic.

12 The “Swamp Fox” Francis Marion – Led a band of South Carolina militia in guerilla-style attacks against the British.

13 British Leaders

14 General Thomas Gage – Led British troops from Boston in search of Patriot leaders, weapons, and ammunition, engaging them at Lexington and at Concord.

15 General William Howe – Engaged Patriot forces at the battles of Bunker Hill, Long Island, and Philadelphia

16 General Charles Cornwallis – Commanded the British Army in the South, losing the Battle of Yorktown to the Americans.

17 General John Burgoyne – Developed the British battle plan in early 1777 but lost to Patriot forces at Saratoga.

18 Barry St. Leger – Defeated at Fort Stanwix by American forces led by Benedict Arnold

19 Benedict Arnold – Upset at the perceived lack of recognition he received from superiors, Arnold plotted to hand Fort West Point over to the British but escaped before he could be captured. Commanded British troops that captured and burned the Virginia capital of Richmond.

20 Sir Henry Clinton – Commander-in-Chief of British forces after 1778; devised the strategy of pitting Southern Loyalists against Patriots.
