1 CLICK TO SHOW ANIMATION
Version: 30th July 2018

2 In the last 10 years, 376 people might still be alive if the Life-Saving Rules had been followed*
Why this session is important and why our company has chosen to follow the Life-Saving Rules *From analysis of fatal incidents reported to IOGP ( )

3 You are about to watch a short animation that shows a typical work scenario in any oil and gas business. Your mission is to spot any unsafe situations. Watch video – link

4 Now, take a moment to write down what you noticed. Ok, lets discuss
What did each of you spot? Do you think any of those situations relate to a Life-Saving Rule? Did you spot people following a Life-Saving Rule?

5 We’re going to watch the video again, this time it’ll pause to highlight scenes where a Life-Saving Rule is relevant. Watch reflection video – link Did we spot all the situations the video highlighted?

6 Watch reflection video – link
Now let’s re-watch the video, and pause after every situation to discuss: ‘green’ situations – why was that compliant with the Life-Saving Rule highlighted? ‘red’ situations – what would have made that compliant with the Life-Saving Rule highlighted? Re-watch scenes as you much as you want! Watch reflection video – link

7 Thinking about what you watched: Thinking about your work activities:
Other Life-Saving Rules focus on specific activities, whereas the Rule ‘Line of Fire’ is intended to raise awareness of struck-by and caught-in-between hazards. Thinking about what you watched: Could the Rule ‘Line of Fire’ be relevant elsewhere in the video? Thinking about your work activities: Line of fire hazards are not always obvious or constant and can be introduced as the task progresses (e.g. underground and overhead powerlines, pipelines, objects under pressure, stored energy, lines under tension, poorly supported excavations, shifting cargo, moving equipment). How can you spot Line of Fire hazards and help each other stay our of the Line of Fire? For info: The Energy Institute has a great Line-of-Fire Reflective Learning toolkit, maybe one for another session. It’s available from here:

8 How should I use Life-Saving Rules?
STOP Toolbox talks & Safety meetings Can we learn from incidents that involved a Life-Saving Rule not being followed? Pre-job planning Are we doing any work today involving a Life-Saving Rule? How can we follow the Rule from start to finish? What needs to be in place? Is everything in place, and in good working condition? Last minute risk assessment Have I done all the Life-Saving Rules actions? Is everything as we discussed in the pre-job planning? Are there any Line of Fire hazards or ignition sources we didn’t identify? Post-job reviews Did we take all the actions associated with the Life-Saving Rules? What went well? What didn’t go well? Anything to note for the next time we have to this perform task or work in this area? Observations & walkabouts Do you see anyone performing work where a Life-Saving Rule is relevant? Are they following the Rule? Yes? Great, recognise it! No? Intervene! Intervention Intervene or stop the work if a Life-Saving Rule is not being followed Thank you all for being so engaged, before we finish, just a reminder of how we use the Rules as we go through our working day.

9 Work does not start until we are all aware of the Life-Saving Rules and can confirm we can follow them throughout We are all authorised to intervene or stop work if we are in any doubt about the safety of an activity or we can't follow the Rules STOP Everyone has the authority and is encouraged to stop work and intervene. If any of us see a situation where a Rules is not being followed, when we’re unsure, we stop, ask, and that the time to make sure it is safe. When we stop and intervene it may be the last opportunity to prevent injury or fatality.

10 Thank you!
