ISLAND HOPPING: Get to Island Take control from Japan Make it base for US Bomber (B-29’s) Firebomb Japan Slow & Costly strategy Carriers - Enormous Ships that had many planes on them. Moving bases for planes.

After the bombing of Hawaii (Pearl Harbor)... 1) Philippines Belonged to us after Spanish-American War Defended it for 3 months before surrendering to Japan Bataan Death March- 80,000 prisoners forced to march 65 miles to prison camp. 10,000 died. Largest Surrender in our history. 2) Battle of Midway Island “Midway” between Japan & Hawaii We ambushed Japan because we broke their code Considered turning point in war for USA Japan lost 4 Carriers, 4,000 soldiers killed.

80,000 Japanese killed 100,000 Filipino civilians killed ***Only 1,000 Japanese Surrendered*** Led by General Douglas MacArthur 2) Battle of Iwo Jima 7,000 Marines lost their lives Island very close to Japan - now can firebomb 3) Tokyo Firebombed with Napalm 80,000 Civilians burned to death 250,000 Building Destroyed 67 other japanese cities firebombed

V. Dropping the Bomb USA wanted unconditional surrender = Emperor Hirohito to step down. Japan revered him as God on Earth, would not surrender. Potsdam Declaration: “Surrender or face prompt and utter destruction”.-USA “....” No reply -Japan Manhattan Project: led by Robert Oppenheimer built the first ever Atomic Bombs 1) Hiroshima - Bomb “Little Boy” killed 120,000 people instantly and another 70,000 died from radiation poisoning. 2) Nagasaki -Bomb “Fat Man” killed 75,000 people instantly These 2 Bombs > Americans killed in entire Pacific War

International Military Tribunals would sentence 25 Japanese leaders with war crimes Did not charge Emperor Hirohito (to avoid backlash) Many Japanese not charged by trading information learned from Unit 731.
