2 June 2009 Abstract This contribution propose a to use Media Independent Coexistence mechanism to solve the coexistence of the heterogeneous devices in TV White Spaces. We also propose to consider the possibility of further dividing the 6MHz TV Channels into more sub-channels. Heterogeneous devices can be put in different sub-channels. This can avoid the interference among heterogeneous devices in TV White Space efficiently. It is suitable for the coexistence of fixed and portable devices. 5 June 2009 Observations The coexistence issue is quite complex in the TV White Spaces as so many devices may co-located in the same places. Proposed mechanism should at least be able to solve the generic coexistence scenario specified in previous slides. An extreme case is that only one spare TV channel is available. Coexistence among fixed and portable devices. Fixed and portable type II devices can access the database via Internet They can also provide geo-location information. Portable type I devices are under the control of portable type II/fixed devices. Coexistence among devices only with spectrum sensing capability. 7 Classify the Possible Coexistence Mechanisms
Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) 802.16h: coexist of and Spectrum may not be full utilized as different standard has different spectrum policy. 802.16: minimum bandwidth 1.25 MHz 802.11: minimum bandwidth 5 MHz Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) A possible direction. Should we consider further divide the 6 MHz channels into narrow bands such as 1MHz or 1.25 MHz? 8 Media Independent Coexistence (MIC)
Proposed by in March Manages the spectrum via higher layer transport protocols. Suitable for the coexistence of fixed and portable devices. Consider the possibility of adding in a spectrum manager and helping the spectrum allocation. Accept spectrum request from TVBDs. Allocate spectrums according to the request and information from database. The information can be geo-location, interference range of devices etc. Consider to further divide a TV channel into more sub-channels Devices belong to the same standard can use the same sub-channel.
