Presentation on theme: "Why are droughts hazardous?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Read the article: identify how the drought is impacting on people and the environment

2 Why are droughts hazardous?
Learning Objectives: To know how droughts are hazardous To understand the social, economic and environmental impacts of drought To understand how the impacts of drought on people and ecosystems vary depending on a country’s level of development To recognise the different responses to drought from individuals, organisations and governments

3 Impacts of drought Make a list of all the reasons droughts are hazardous in MEDCs and LEDCs. Use p85 of the GCSE text book to help you. MEDCs LEDCs e.g. people have to conserve water so they have enough throughout the day. e.g. crops don’t grow and farmers that rely on crops don’t earn money.

4 Impacts of and responses to drought: Namibia vs California
One half of the room will be looking at Namibia and the other half California. You will have to identify the impacts of drought and the responses to the drought and complete your section of the table. Challenge: Try and work out the reasons why your country responded to the drought in the way it did and include these in your table too. When you have finished Q1-3, find someone studying the other country and share your ideas with them, to complete the table.

5 To what extent do you agree with this statement?
Analysis Questions: Which country had the “worst” impacts? Why? (What does worst mean? Worst for who, what?) Which country had the “best” responses? Why? (What does best mean? Best for who, what?) Which responses were the “easiest” or “hardest” to achieve? Why? (What does easiest/hardest mean? Easiest/hardest for who, what?) Challenge: Why do the impacts and therefore the responses to drought vary? “The impacts of, and responses to, drought vary depending on a country’s level of development.” To what extent do you agree with this statement?

6 Comparing Droughts
