2 Info #1 Democratic standard-bearer: 51 year old James Earl Carter- Dark horse candidate who galloped out of obscurity during the long primary-election season. Ran against Nixon and Watergate as much as he ran against Ford Campaign Pitch: “I’ll never lie to you” Won with 51% of the popular vote

3 Info #2 Most important voters were the African American voters as he won 97% of their vote. Carter enjoyed hefty Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress Granted requests to create a new cabinet-level Department of Energy to cut taxes He was widely liked and successful until he got in his own way, constantly rubbing congressional fur the wrong way.
