Mitochondria release cytochrome c, which activates Apaf-1 to generate an oligomeric platform known as the apoptosome capable of activating caspase-9. The process is negatively regulated by direct inhibition of caspase-9 by XIAP. Wei et al. now show that cytochrome c is itself sequestered by tRNAs, providing an additional control mechanism.
