Author’s purpose: Illustrate how impersonal emergency personnel can be at the scene of a tragedy. Words that convey the author’s purpose: “Stretchers are laid out” = passive voice is cold, faceless “Cargo”= impersonal, not human “Afterthought” = careless, like sweeping dust Ways the author conveys purpose: Characters Imagery Metaphor Irony Attitude Possible PTS’s: The ambulance workers metaphorically mirror the carelessness with which we live and die. Shapiro uses the passive voice to create a tone of detachment.
