1 Harmonizing data and information across LMEs
Virginie Hart

2 Overall objectives of the DIM work
Support to the LME:LEARN Data and Information Working Group (DIM WG). Review data and information across GEF LME projects & compile metadata catalogue of available GEF marine project data and information Draft LME:LEARN data and information management plan Draft proposal for a set of indicators on large marine ecosystems, related to the SDG14 targets Overall objectives of the DIM work

3 Review of LME project data & Information
103 GEF LME projects reviewed, Project web-sites, and links to report repositories, databases and GIS, plus any key data, information and assessment reports Overall summary for each LME: main governance and core non- GEF supported databases and GIS Review of LME project data & Information

4 LME project DIM Review overall findings
Project information & web-sites: aprox. 60% with information and reports Reports, assessments etc: thousands of important reports, strategies and plans, EIA’s, maps, assessments, training etc. Plus Atlas’s and storybooks Approach to data and assessments: All projects are based on existing data and information or support new data/information Data sources? Limited metadata information available Databases and GIS: Regional & national databases. Either supporting existing or creation of new databases. Coordination is key: Good examples of coordination between project, EA & regional organizations LME project DIM Review overall findings

5 Example GIS

6 LME Data and Information Management Plan
Focus on sustainability and integration of data and information Data & Information strategy or plan – long term vision Web-sites: Ensure sustainability of project web-sites & all project results, reports & data publications per year refer to large marine ecosystems Data management and GIS: Record metadata and coordinate data & information management to support national/regional organizations Encourage good practices in data management within the region Long-term reporting on SAP, other regional targets & state of environment reporting (links to SDGs) Identify & incorporate best-practices tools and guidelines regarding data and information management LME Data and Information Management Plan

7 LME Data and Information Management Plan
Can projects support harmonization of data & info from national, regional to global level? Data & Information plan/protocol. Encourage transparency and data sharing (SEIS principles) Support countries in monitoring and reporting to SAP targets, combined with other obligations (SDG’s, Convention reporting etc.) Integrate GIS into regional platforms/global platforms and IW:Learn Geonode? What about SDG data and information platforms? What support do projects need for this? Tools, templates etc. Atlas’s, story books and state of environment assessments to be shared through IW:LEARN. Common approaches? Avoid multiple data and GIS platforms not maintained in the future Part of a broader discussion!! LME Data and Information Management Plan

8 Identifying key LME Indicators
Indicators used for SAP monitoring & state of environment reporting Indicators: Process, stress reduction & environmental Status, DPSIR Indicator & Indices reporting: data or other reporting national data, socioeconomic and governance data and reporting Incorporates relevant SDG (6, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17), Regional Seas and LME indicators (also TWAP, BIP and other indicators) Initial list based on the 5 LME modules ((i) productivity and oceanography, (ii) fish and fisheries, (iii) pollution and ecosystem health, (iv) socioeconomics and (v) governance) Global databases, SDG’s, OECD, TWAP, IOC/IODE, LME regional databases and indicators National Data and reporting on governance Identifying key LME Indicators

9 Identifying key LME Indicators
Initial draft list of 89 indicators LME’s to consider incorporation of indicators into SAP and assessments as appropriate and ensure common reporting New LME projects (SAPPHIRE, Bay of Bengal, CFI, Mediterranean, Indonesian Sea, CCLME) to consider cooperation on integrating SDG and common indicators into SAP and common approach to reporting. IW:LEARN/Mediterranean cooperation as good example? Identifying key LME Indicators

10 Next steps/Discussion
What are the experiences of LME projects in data and information management? Challenges and successes? Coordination with other organizations? What do LME’s want as part of the Data and Information Management Working Group – towards meeting in 2018? Examples of web-sites and presentation of project outputs/reports Examples of Data & Information Plans, Monitoring plans/protocols and metadata templates? Examples of innovative approaches to analysing data? Ecosystem approach, climate, socio-economic models, economic evaluations? Examples of web-sites, databases, GIS, assessments, atlas’s and story maps? Integration of the SDG’s? Finalization of the Data & Information Management Plan – compilation of all data/information LME plans/protocols etc in IW:LEARN web-site. Upload to IWLEARN geonode. Review and discussion on the draft indicators – steps to further work towards the next meeting of the DIM WG Next steps/Discussion
