2 Reminder - Request received for a map
Purpose: Guide the planning of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) services in the Province of Kampong Cham Audience: EmONC Province officer Content: Location of EmoNC services on top of the commune level predicted number of pregnant women for the most recent year Medium: A4 size map stored in a pdf file

3 Request received for a map
Geospatial data that has been compiled for Kampong Cham Commune boundaries shapefile (OCHA) The Health facility master list containing the geographic location of each health facility (DPHI) Data placed in the TRAINING_MATERIAL\EXERCISES\EXERCISE_4 \Data folder on your USB key + You will also find in this folder: The same Commune level estimated number of pregnant women for 2015 The list of EmONC facilities functional in 2016 Copy the folder to your computer hard disk

4 Commune boundaries shapefile
Exercise 4 – Part 1 Commune boundaries shapefile Open QGIS Click the Add Vector Layer button Browse to the location of the EXERCISE_4\Data\Kampong-Cham folder on your computer Select the COM_Kampong-Cham.shp file and click Open Click Open again The Township boundaries for the Region of Magway should appear in the map canvas of QGIS

5 Save your project! – think to do it regularly…
Exercise 4 – Part 1 Save your project! – think to do it regularly… Click on the save icon Browse to the folder where you want to save your QGIS project Enter a file name and click Save Commune boundaries shapefile - Metadata The metadata stored in QGIS is unfortunately only attached to the project and not the shape file Have a look at the README.txt file stored in the TRAINING_MATERIAL\EXERCISES\EXERCISE_4\Data\Kampong-Cham folder to get information about this layer 5

6 Commune boundaries shapefile - Projection
Exercise 4 – Part 1 Commune boundaries shapefile - Projection Right click on the layer Select Properties in the menu Click on General The information about the geographic coordinate and projection system is stored under “Coordinate reference system” Layer not projected, only using the a geographic coordinate system (WGS 84)

7 Commune boundaries shapefile – Attribute table
Exercise 4 – Part 1 Commune boundaries shapefile – Attribute table Right click on the layer Select Open Attribute table in the menu Take some time to look at how the attribute table is structured (rows, columns) Does this remind you of another table we saw in the previous exercise? Does the content of the shape file match the content of the master list?

8 Exercise 4 – Part 1 Communes – Link with the number of pregnant women
Click once again the Add Vector Layer button Browse to the location of the EXERCISE_4\Data folder on your computer Select the Preg_Wom_Com_Kampong-Cham_2015.xlsx file and click Open and Click Open again In the next dialogue box, select the « Data » sheet and click ok Open the attribute table (same way as for the shapefile) and compare the two tables. Note that the inclusion of the Administrative Division Master List in the population dataset and the shapefile make it easier to immediately link the two information. This saves time and effort . Do they contain the same list of Communes? Is there a unique identifier in common to both tables that could be used to join them together?

9 Exercise 4 – Part 1 Communes – Link with the number of pregnant women
This means that we can join the content of the pregnant table (excel) to the attribute table of the shapefile Right click on the shapefile name in the menu and click on Properties Click on Joins in the window that opens Click on the « + » icon at the bottom of the window In the window that opens select: Preg_Wom_Com_Kampong-Cham_2015Data as the Join layer COM_CODE as the join field COM_C_OCH as the target field in the shapefile Click Ok Twice

10 Exercise 4 – Part 1 Communes – Link with the number of pregnant women
Re-open the attribute table of the Commune boundaries shapefile Notice that the content of the pregnant women table from the excel file is now included into the shapefile attribute table Check that there is a number of pregnant women attached to each Commune as a way to control that the join worked properly Layer ready for thematic mapping! Don’t forget to save your project!

11 Health facility location layer
Exercise 4 – Part 2 Health facility location layer In this case, we have to convert the content of the health facility master list into a shapefile Open the HFML_Kampong-Cham_final.xslx file in excel and save it as text delimited (.txt) Close Excel In QGIS: Click on the Add Delimited Text Layer button In the window that opens: Browse to the .txt file Select Custom delimiters under file format Indicate which fields contain the longitudes and latitudes under Geometry definition Click Ok

12 Health facility location layer
Exercise 4 – Part 2 Health facility location layer In the new window that opens you need to specify the Coordinate Reference system Choose WGS 84 as the geographic coordinates in the health facility master list are not projected (decimal degrees) Click Ok The location of the health facilities in the master list are now on top of the Townships Save the project!

13 Health facility location layer
Exercise 4 – Part 2 Health facility location layer !!!! The points are not yet saved in a shapefile!!! To do so: Right click on the layer containing the points in the layer panel and click on Save as In the Window that opens: Select Esri Shapefile as the Format Browse to the folder where you want to save it and give it a name Keep WGS 84 as the CRS Click Ok

14 Health facility location layer
Exercise 4 – Part 2 Health facility location layer The new shape file is now added to the layer panel You can delete the temporary layer by right clicking on it and then click on Remove Once done, save the project and: Make sure that all the points are falling within the Kampong Cham Province (click on the zoom to full extent button for that ) Open the attribute table and check that all the content from the master list is there (95 health facilities) Save the project!

15 Health facility location - Link with the EmONC status
Exercise 4 – Part 2 Health facility location - Link with the EmONC status Click once again the Add Vector Layer button Browse to the location of the EXERCIE_4\Data folder on your computer Select the Final_EmONC_Kampong-Cham_2016.xlsx file and click Open and Click Open again In the dialogue box that opens selecte the « data » sheet and click ok Open the attribute table (same way as for the shapefile) Note that the inclusion of the Administrative Division Master List in the population dataset and the shapefile make it easier to immediately link the two information. This saves time and effort . Does the number of records match the one from the original excel file (11)? Do we have the unique identifier? Is there an information appearing for each health facility in the 2016_STATUS and PLAN_STATUS columns?

16 Health facility location - Link with the EmONC status
Exercise 4 – Part 2 Health facility location - Link with the EmONC status We can join the content of the EmONC status (excel) to the attribute table of the health facility master list shapefile Right click on the health facility shapefile name in the menu and click on Properties Click on Joins in the window that opens Click on the « + » icon at the bottom of the window In the window that opens select: Final_EmONC_Kampong-Cham_2016Data as the Join layer HF_ID_TEMP as the join field HF_ID_TEMP as the target field in the shapefile Click Ok Twice Save the project!

17 Health facility location - Link with the EmONC status
Exercise 4 – Part 2 Health facility location - Link with the EmONC status Re-open the attribute table of the health facility shapefile Notice that the content of the EmoNC Status from the excel file excel is now included into the shapefile attribute table Notice that there is not a value for all the health facilities because the Health Facility master list contains more facilities (95 facilities) than the EmoNC status (11) Click on the header of the “Final_EmONC_Kampong-Cham_2016 Data_HF_NAME_EN”” column and scroll down to check that the join worked for all the 11 facilities Does all the health facilities for which we have a EmoNC status have a latitude/ Longitude? Layer ready for thematic mapping But with some limitations…!

18 Exercise 4 - Conclusion It is easy to join the statistical data to the corresponding shapefile once the data is well organize and contain the same unique identifier than in the attribute table of the shape file It is also easy to create a shape file directly from the Longitude and Latitude stored in an excel file such as the health facility master list. We are now ready to make some thematic maps!
