1
Why is Carbon Important?
All living things contain Carbon Bonds easily with other elements The building block of life on earth Primary component of Macromolecules
2
CARBON CYCLES THROUGH ALL OF EARTH’S SPHERES
LITHOSPHERE
3
Plants Use Carbon Dioxide
Photosynthesis REMOVE CO2 from the atmosphere. Sunlight + CO2 = glucose (C6H12O6) or CARBS Carbon can be used by the plant (food) and to build the plant (cellulose). **HOW DOES DEFORESTATION IMPACT CO2 THIS CYCLE?
4
PHOTOSYNTHESIS FEEDING/EATING
RESPIRATION FEEDING/EATING
5
Animals Eat ADDS CO2 to the atmosphere from cellular respiration
When organisms eat plants, they take in the carbon (CARBS) and some of it becomes part of their own bodies. ADDS CO2 to the atmosphere from cellular respiration (break down of glucose)
6
Cow Farts ADD Carbon (CH3) in the form of METHANE to the atmosphere
7
FOSSIL FUELS = CARBON STORED UNDERGROUND
Plants and Animal Die Dead organisms are decomposed by bacteria and CO2 IS ADDED to the atmosphere FOSSIL FUELS = CARBON STORED UNDERGROUND Some are not decomposed fully and end up STORED underground (oil, coal, natural gas & LIMESTONE.)
