Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures < ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE Working Group. 3 Use Case #1: Query SSPN List
Month Year doc.: IEEE /0267r0 February 2007 Use Case #1: Query SSPN List STA (11u-capable) AP (11u-capable) IS (local AN) IS (“home” SSPN) Pre-configuration Advertising protocol ID (APID) = IS Maximum acceptable length (LEN) for query responses Pre-configuration Beacon (Interworking IE, GAS:APID) Probe Request Probe Response (Interworking IE, GAS:APID) Relay MIH frame (with query content) Note 1: Further investigation required Note 2: Query ID required Transport method: (1) 802.3, (2) IP GAS initial request (request IE, APID) Query content (“list of SSPNs?”) GAS Initial Response (Query ID, Dialog Token, comeback delay) COLOR KEY Needs work (optional – STA to PS mode) Comeback delay MIH Response (transaction ID, answer information); may be delayed until answer is ready Out of scope 802.11 GAS Comeback Request (Query ID) 802.21 GAS Comeback Response (Query ID, answer information) Matthew Gast, Trapeze Networks Matthew Gast, Trapeze Networks

4 Questions and notes What is the AP-to-IS communication?
Month Year doc.: IEEE /0267r0 February 2007 Questions and notes What is the AP-to-IS communication? What is the protocol used? Is it direct L2 connection, MIPSHOP, RADIUS/DIAMETER, or something else entirely? Potential resolution: needs to create an IP-based transport protocol. Is a query ID necessary to match STA query to IS responses? Potential resolution: AP assures that Transaction ID is unique on a per-STA basis for a reasonable time interval, and rewrites Transaction ID if necessary for uniqueness This works as a long as transactions are not integrity protected. There is no security in state 1, so this may not be a big drawback. Does the STA need to refrain from using integrity protection in state 1? How much interpretation does AP do of MIH requests? If none, then will any claimed frame from STA be relayed to IS? How much of the MIH packet does the AP need to understand? Query and response should be opaque. How much of the header is necessary? Matthew Gast, Trapeze Networks Matthew Gast, Trapeze Networks

5 Additional Notes How does an AP discovery the IS?
Month Year doc.: IEEE /0267r0 February 2007 Additional Notes How does an AP discovery the IS? Is this just an administrative configuration? Or is there a discovery protocol? For clarity, the u amendment must contain an informative annex for how to interact with MIH operations Matthew Gast, Trapeze Networks Matthew Gast, Trapeze Networks
