Joint Oceanic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling Began operations in 1978 as an oil exploration vessel. JOIDES was converted to a scientific vessel in 1985 when it began working for the Ocean Drilling Program. It is now operated by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP)

Purpose is the collect sediment core samples from the bottom of the ocean Name after the HMS Resolution which was captained by James Cook in the 1800s

Operates 24 hours a day 50 scientists and technicians 65 crewmen
