Solar System Presented By: Mrs. Joy Johnson

2 Topic Description Students will know the Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun and the planets appear to move across the sky among the stars, reflecting the sun's light.  Students will know every objects exerts a gravitational force on every object, depending on size, and this accounts for weights changing on the other planets and moons.

3 Learning Targets SCI A The Earth, Sun, and Moon are part of a larger system that includes other planets and smaller celestial bodies a. Observe and identify the Earth is one of several planets within a solar system that orbits the Sun b. Observe and identify the Moon orbits the Earth in about a month c. Identify that planets look like stars and appear to move across the sky among the stars

4 Behavioral Objective   After learning about the solar system, the students will complete a worksheet identifying the Earth, Moon, Sun, and other planets accurately describing each part of the solar system.

5 What are the basic components of the Solar System?
Essential Questions What are the basic components of the Solar System? What are the unique characteristics of each planet in the Solar System?

6 What do you know about the…
Sun? earth

7 What do you know about the…
Earth? Rotation - Revolution

8 Did you know… All planets have Moons, except for Mercury and Venus
The distance from the Sun to Earth is about 93 million miles? If this distance is scaled to about 45 feet, the nearest star to the Sun would be located about 2,490 miles away?

11 What makes a planet livable?
Critical Thinking What makes a planet livable? moon

12 What do you know about the…
Moon? Other planets

13 What do you know about the…
Other Planets? Earth vs Jupiter

14 What makes Earth different from other planets?
Critical Thinking What makes Earth different from other planets? moon

15 Two Types of Planets Terrestrial Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
Small, dense, rocky Located in the inner part of the Solar System They have solid surfaces Have just a couple moons at most Rotate slowly Have no rings around them. Jovian Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune Gas giants H/He All have rings Extensive amount of moons No solid surface on which to stand They may have a solid, rocky core at their centers a few times the size of Earth.
