2 Prepositions A preposition is a word that shows a relationship of a noun/pronoun to another word in the sentence. They help readers with directions, positions, place, time, amounts, and causes.

5 What is a Prepositional Phrase?
A prepositional phrase is a phrase that starts with a preposition and ends with an object (noun/pronoun) preposition and the word(s) following it stretches a sentence can be removed leaving a basic sentence intact The bench in the park is needed for walkers. Tip: Remove the prepositional phrase(s) in green and your basic sentence remains. The bench is needed.

6 Examples: Tommy ran. (basic sentence)
Tommy ran to the store. (add a prepositional phrase) Tommy ran to the store on a hot day. (add another prepositional phrase)

7 Try Your Own: The lights were bright. 2. Use basic sentence + 1 phrase
1. Write a basic sentence The lights were bright. 2. Use basic sentence + 1 phrase The lights were bright in the classroom. 3. Use basic sentence + 2 phrases The lights were bright in the classroom on Monday.

8 Let’s Practice: The letter ___ the table was gone!
Donald ate three scoops ___ ice cream. The boxes ___ the backdoor were empty. ______ any notice, she was gone. Can we drive ______ the park? Tip: Remove the prepositional phrase and your basic sentence remains.

9 INFINITIVES An infinitive is a verb form that can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. Most infinitives begin with TO. TO+ VERB= infinitive EX: The soccer player TO WATCH this season is Sam Walton. EX. Prepositions will be easy TO MEMORIZE.

10 Sandra went to eat with her best friend.
I would like to read an interesting book this summer. The children want to go to the movies to watch The Lion King. The beautiful teacher needs to grade some compositions over the weekend. Now it is your turn.

11 Now it is your turn. On a separate sheet of paper write 10 sentences using prepositional phrases. Underline them in green. VARY your sentences. Ex: My friend took me to the park for a run, and then we went around the picnic area.
