1 Generating Electricity
Aims ·         Describe how to produce an electric current by rotating a magnet in a coil of wire, as in a dynamo. Describe the factors that affect the size and direction of an induced voltage.

2 Electromagnetic induction
What will happen if you move a magnet into a coil of wire? A current is induced in the coil. Only when the magnet is moving.

3 Stationery magnet What happens when the magnet is in the coil?
Nothing!! A current is only induced when the magnet is moving.

4 Electromagnetic induction
What will happen if you move the magnet out of the coil of wire? A current is induced in the coil. This time in the opposite direction. If you reverse the direction of the movement, then you reverse the direction of the current.

5 What type of current is this?
AC or DC? What will happen if you move a magnet in and out of the coil repeatedly? A current will be induced in the coil, the current will flow in one direction and then reverse and flow in the opposite direction. What type of current is this? Alternating current

6 Electromagnetic induction
The direction of the induced current is reversed if… The magnet is moved in the opposite direction The other pole is inserted first

7 Electromagnetic induction
The size of the induced current can be increased by: Increasing the speed of movement Increasing the magnet strength Increasing the number of turns on the coil
