1 Momentum

2 Which is harder to stop:
A large truck A small car Momentum is “inertia in motion” Mass x Velocity

3 Conservation of Momentum
In the absence of external forces, the momentum of a system remains unchanged.

4 Collisions Conservation of Momentum The momentum of the objects before the collision is equal to the momentum of the objects after the collision. 2 types: Elastic and Inelastic

5 Elastic Collisions One object hits another….transfers its momentum…stops…and the 2nd object starts to move.

6 Conservation of Momentum
Inelastic Collisions You are hovering next to the space shuttle in earth-orbit and your buddy of equal mass who is moving 4 m/s (with respect to the ship) bumps into you. If she holds onto you, then how fast do the two of you move after the collision? Two astronauts move together with a velocity of 2 m/s after the collision. One object hit another….the 2 object stick together and keep moving.

10 Momentum Problem A train car with a mass of 2000kg is traveling at 20 m/s when it collides with and sticks to another car with a mass of 1000kg and continues to move. What is the velocity of the two trains after the collision? Packet: Ambrose and Granny
