Causes Religious groups thought drinking was sinful Protect public health Belief that alcohol led to crime, wife and child abuse and accidents at work Nativism- immigrant groups use of alcohol Effects Consumption of alcohol decreased Disrespect for law increased Smuggling and bootlegging Growth of organized crime (Al Capone)

Al Capone Led criminal activity in Chicago Became rich due to prohibition Used killing and intimidation (bribe government officials) Eventually put in jail for income tax evasion

Speakeasies- hidden saloons and nightclubs Bootlegging- practice of illegally smuggling liquor into the US during Prohibition

7 Scopes Trial Fundamentalists
Religious movement that believed in teaching the Bible Argued against many scientific discoveries and theories Example- argued against Charles Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection and man descending from animals

8 Background Tennessee passed law that made teaching evolution and Charles Darwin illegal John Scopes teaches it anyway and gets arrested Trial- fight over evolution and the role of science and religion in public schools Radio- allow people all over the country to hear news about the trial Verdict- Scopes found guilty and fined $100 Impact- shows how American society will challenge traditional beliefs

Fashions- close fitting felt hats, dresses an inch above the knee, silk stockings, pumps (shoes), beads and necklaces Actions- smoking cigarettes, drinking in public, talking openly about sex Dances- fox trot, tango, Charleston Attitude- marriage thought of as an equal partnership
