1 Warm-Up List the 5 steps of the scientific method.
In your opinion, what is the most important class norm or rule. 3. Why is this the most important one?

2 Class Norms Come in quietly & get started on the Warm-Up
Raise your hand & wait to be called on before speaking Be RESPECTFUL of others! Do NOT leave your seat without permission Keep the teacher happy…it helps them do their job! Wait to be dismissed

3 Science Folders Label your Binder (Journal) as follows: SCIENCE
7th Grade (your name) Block

4 Science Journal Keep it in good condition Keep the rubric in front
Keep up with all pages Number each page correctly Keep all pages in order

5 Science Journal Sections
Warm Ups/Reflections/Exit Slips Class Notes Class Work/Lab Reports Homework Quizzes/Tests

6 What is an SPI? State Performance Indicator Example:
SPI Use a table of physical properties to classify minerals.

7 What are Conflict/Blood Diamonds?
Private Think Time Share with a Partner Share with the Class

8 Sierra Leone

9 Minerals

10 What is a Mineral? A mineral is a naturally formed, inorganic solid that has a definite crystalline structure and chemical composition* Naturally occurring - Found in the Earth’s crust Inorganic - Made of materials that are nonliving Solid - Has a definite volume and shape Crystalline structure - Repeating pattern of mineral particles Definite chemical composition - Contains certain elements in measurable amounts

11 Chemical Composition Element Compound
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by ordinary chemical means* Examples: Carbon (C), Sodium (Na), & Chlorine (Cl) Compound Substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically joined, or bonded* Most minerals exist in this form Examples: Halite (NaCl)

12 Crystals Definition: Solid, geometric forms of minerals produced by a repeating pattern of atoms or molecules* All minerals have a definite crystalline structure

13 The largest known gypsum crystals in the world are found in a cavern deep below northern Mexico's Chihuahuan Desert

14 Two Major Mineral Categories
Silicate Minerals - Compound consisting of silicon, oxygen, & one or more metals* Examples: Quartz, Feldspar, & Mica Non Silicate Minerals - Do not contain silicon or oxygen* Examples: Gold, Calcite, & Fluorite

15 Mineral Formation Two Major Methods: Crystallization of melted
materials (magma) Crystallization of materials dissolved in water

16 Mineral Resources Metals Non Metals Other Uses
Valued for ability to be stretched into wire, flattened into sheets, and hammered/molded without breaking Used in machinery, cell phones, and building materials Non Metals Used in concrete and other building materials, even computer chips Gemstones Non metal minerals valued for color, durability, and rarity Used in jewelry and mechanical parts Other Uses Food, medicine, fertilizer, etc…

17 Minerals Around Us Private Think Time Share with a Partner
Name 3 things in this room made of minerals. Private Think Time Share with a Partner Share with the Class

18 Mineral Mining Ore Two Main Types of Mining:
A mineral deposit large and pure enough to be mined for profit Two Main Types of Mining: Surface Mining* - Used when deposits are near the Earth’s surface - Examples: Mountain top removal, Strip-mining, & Open-pit Subsurface Mining* - Used when deposits are deep within the Earth’s crust - Example: Shaft Mines

19 Mining Methods Strip Mining Mountaintop Removal Shaft Mining

20 Mineral Processing Smelting
Process of melting an ore and separating the useful metal from the other elements

21 Environmental Impacts of Mining*
Destroys habitat of plants & animals* Pollutes rivers, lakes, & ground water* Scars the Earth* Before After
