Algebra Concepts Section 1.4 Integers and Absolute Value

2 Warmup Write an algebraic expression for each description.
#1 three less than m # divided by a number #3 a number plus 7

3 What is a number line? It is an orderly way to arrange numbers in the correct order. Smaller numbers are on the left and larger numbers are on the right.

4

5 To compare two numbers:
Find them on the number line The number farther to the right is the larger one. Be able to use these symbols >π‘”π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿ π‘‘β„Žπ‘Žπ‘› β‰₯π‘”π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿ π‘‘β„Žπ‘Žπ‘› π‘œπ‘Ÿ π‘’π‘žπ‘’π‘Žπ‘™ π‘‘π‘œ < 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 π‘‘β„Žπ‘Žπ‘› ≀𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 π‘‘β„Žπ‘Žπ‘› π‘œπ‘Ÿ π‘’π‘žπ‘’π‘Žπ‘™ π‘‘π‘œ

6 Types of numbers Natural numbers- 1,2,3,4…
Whole numbers-natural numbers plus zero (the hole) 0,1,2,3,4… Opposite numbers- numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line

7 Integers- whole numbers and their opposites
Zero is the divider between the positive numbers to the right and the negative numbers to the left.

8 When are negative numbers used in real life?

9 What does absolute value of a number mean?
The number’s distance from zero on a number line The symbol for absolute value is π‘₯

12 When you take the absolute of a number, remove the absolute value signs. (get out of jail)
When simplifying an expression, treat absolute value signs like parentheses.

13 Simplify each expression.
