1 Using Quotes as Evidence
The importance of love is a theme in The Giver by Lois Lowry shown through Jonas’s need to connect with his friends, feel love from his parents, and share feelings with the Giver. You must find a quote to support each piece of evidence outlined in the thesis statement. need to connect with his friends: “He felt such love for Asher and for Fiona. But they could not feel it back, without the memories” (Lowry 135). feel love from his parents: “’Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’’?” Mother asked. Jonas nodded. . .” (127). share feelings with the Giver: “’But don’t you want to be with me, Giver?’ Jonas asked sadly. The Giver hugged him. ‘I love you Jonas,’ he said” (162).

2 USING Quotes AS EVIDENCE
Use correctly cited quotes that are introduced and analyzed Includes author’s last name and page number of the quote No comma is used (Lowry 124). End mark will be outside the parenthesis Short quotes (four typed lines or less) Introduce and analyze the quote Never drop in a quote without an explanation Always follow a quote with a discussion of how it proves your point – do not assume it speaks for itself – you are interpreting and explaining it’s meaning to the reader Refrain from referring to the quoted words as “the quote” For example – instead of writing “This quote shows that…” write “Mrs. Smith’s donation shows…” *****QUOTE SANDWICH!!
