1 Identifying Rhetorolects
Identify TWO rhetorolects in the following text: (Click for slide progression and answers.) 1 Corinthians 2:6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. Choose two of the following six RHETOROLECTS: WISDOM, APOCALYPTIC, PRECREATION, PROPHETIC, MIRACLE, or PRIESTLY.

2 Identify two rhetorolects in the text.
WISDOM, APOCALYPTIC, PRECREATION, PROPHETIC, MIRACLE, or PRIESTLY. 1 Corinthians 2:6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. Answer: A primary RHETOROLECT is WISDOM, as indicated by the very word “wisdom.” Another RHETOROLECT is APOCALYPTIC. Identify the clause that makes the verse clearly APOCALYPTIC.

3 Identify a clause indicating the presence of APOCALYPTIC rhetorolect.
1 Corinthians 2:6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. Answer: The clause is “who are doomed to pass away.” Identify the clause that shows a blending of WISDOM and APOCALYPTIC.

4 Identify the clause that shows a blending of WISDOM and APOCALYPTIC.
1 Corinthians 2:6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. Answer: We find a blending of the two rhetorolects in the following clause: “not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age.” The key to APOCALYPTIC here is the phrase “this age,” which is contrasted with the “coming age,” when all will be judged.

5 Identify an additional rhetorolect blended
into WISDOM and APOCALYPTIC in verse 7. 1 Corinthians 2:6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7: But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, Which God decreed before the ages for our glorification. Choose one of the following four rhetorolects: PRECREATION, PROPHETIC, MIRACLE, or PRIESTLY.

6 Identify an additional rhetorolect blended into WISDOM and APOCALYPTIC in verse 7. PRECREATION, PROPHETIC, MIRACLE, or PRIESTLY. 1 Corinthians 2:6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away : But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification. Answer: The additional rhetorolect is PRECREATION. Identify the clause indicating PRECREATION rhetorolect.

7 Identify the clause indicating PRECREATION rhetorolect.
1 Corinthians 2:6: Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7: But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification. Answer: The clause is “which God decreed before the ages.”

8 Good Work! Summary: Within the framework of APOCALYPTIC and PRECREATION rhetorolect, WISDOM is “secret and hidden.” WISDOM must come from outside the “created world” that exists in the view of humankind. In the context of APOCALYPTIC rhetorolect, WISDOM is somehow “hidden in the heavens” to be revealed at the end of time. For PRECREATION rhetorolect, WISDOM is hidden in an eternal, invisible realm that was with God before the creation of the world and can only be known through special processes of divine revelation.
