Boco Haram Child Soldiers – from a specific country where this is an issue Government Instability in Mauritania, Algeria, Ethiopia, Kenya Genocide in the Central African Republic Civil War in Sudan Economic Disparity in South Africa as a result of apartheid This website lists quite a few recent conflicts in Africa

3 Description of project
Create a presentation that details (within the past 20 years) conflict in an African nation. Your presentation should include: Details and visuals of the conflict, including its location. Facts and statistics (including charts or maps) that explain the conflict A history of the conflict and contributing factors that led to the conflict (ie: climate changes, religious differences, political instability, fight for natural resources, etc.) The impact of the conflict on the citizens of that country and on neighboring countries Residual problems from the conflict (if the conflict has since been resolved) A theory or argument on how the “Scramble for Africa” may have contributed to the modern conflict.

4 Specific requirements
Your presentation should have AT LEAST 8 slides and/or images (every slide should contain an image) Images may include charts, graphs, and maps Presentation should be visually appealing, thematically appropriate, and contain a minimal use of words on slides All source MUST be cited

5 Annotated bibliography
THIS will comprise the majority of your grade for this project!! You must have AT LEAST 4 sources Each source must be included on an MLA formatted Works Cited page This is separate from your presentation and may not be included on slides 4 of your sources must include a three-paragraph annotation beneath the source on the Works Cited page: Paragraph 1: Explain how you know that this is a credible source. Paragraph 2: Summarize the source. Paragraph 3: Detail the evidence you found in the source that was relevant to your presentation.

7 Bibliography resources
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "References" or "Works Cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.). An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following. Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is. For more help, see our handout on paraphrasing sources. Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? For more help, see our handouts on evaluating resources. Reflect: Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?

8 Sample annotated bibliography
Lamott, Anne. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Anchor Books, 1995. Lamott's book offers honest advice on the nature of a writing life, complete with its insecurities and failures. Taking a humorous approach to the realities of being a writer, the chapters in Lamott's book are wry and anecdotal and offer advice on everything from plot development to jealousy, from perfectionism to struggling with one's own internal critic. In the process, Lamott includes writing exercises designed to be both productive and fun. Lamott offers sane advice for those struggling with the anxieties of writing, but her main project seems to be offering the reader a reality check regarding writing, publishing, and struggling with one's own imperfect humanity in the process. Rather than a practical handbook to producing and/or publishing, this text is indispensable because of its honest perspective, its down-to- earth humor, and its encouraging approach. Chapters in this text could easily be included in the curriculum for a writing class. Several of the chapters in Part 1 address the writing process and would serve to generate discussion on students' own drafting and revising processes. Some of the writing exercises would also be appropriate for generating classroom writing exercises. Students should find Lamott's style both engaging and enjoyable. In the sample annotation above, the writer includes three paragraphs: a summary, an evaluation of the text, and a reflection on its applicability to his/her own research, respectively.
