Propaganda analysis Discussion
As you scroll through the propaganda, consider the following and take notes based on your observations. Consider the social hysteria model as you examine the propaganda. “It wasn’t long after the end of the second World War that Communist forces in America seized their chance. The story is sad…the end tragic…but this is the way it began…”

Pushing Back Against the Hysteria
Ironically, while the media helped initially fuel the hysteria, they would also be the group that would first stand up against it publically Standing up against it personally put any journalist in the line of fire for accusations and blacklisting Herblock (Herbert Block) an editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post was one the most avid critics of the Red Scare and McCarthyism

Political cartoon analysis
As you examine political cartoons, consider the features of the text type. Look for: Irony, hyperbole, and satire Word bubbles, captions, labels Images that stand out to you Use of Rhetorical appeals Consider: What makes a political cartoon a “safer” place to challenge and critique? What is the effect of the cartoon on the reader and what creates that effect? How is Herblock challenging Mccarthy?
