1 Ardrossan Academy Dead Earth
Subtopic - Photosynthesis

2 Describe what photosynthesis is. Explain how food is stored by plant.
Lesson Title: Photosynthesis Learning Intention: Describe what photosynthesis is. Explain how food is stored by plant. Activity: I will be successful if I can : Write the word equation for photosynthesis.

3 How many words can you make from the word photosynthesis?
Starter How many words can you make from the word photosynthesis? s o t h i p o s n y e h t s

4 Why are plants so important?

5 How do plants grow? Many years ago, people thought that plants ate soil and that made them grow. But think about it, if that really happened then there wouldn’t be any soil left! Plants actually grow by making their own food, not by eating soil. So where does the stuff that plants are made of come from?

6 How do plants make their own food?
One of the raw materials that plants need to make food does come from the soil, the other comes from the air. What are these two raw materials? carbon dioxide (from the air) water (from the soil) Plants use carbon dioxide and water to make their own food in a chemical reaction. What is the name of this reaction?

7 What is Photosynthesis?
Split up the word: Photo Synthesis Do you know what they mean? Photo = LIGHT Synthesis = TO MAKE SOMETHING

8 Watch this short clip on photosynthesis in plant leaves.

9 Carbon dioxide Water Light energy
What do plants need in order to make food by photosynthesis? Carbon dioxide Water Light energy Where do they get these ‘raw materials’ from?

10 Photosynthesis is when plants use light energy from the sun to make ‘food’ (sugar)

11 Where does photosynthesis happen?
Plant cells in the upper surface of leaves have chloroplasts which contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. chlorophyll carbon dioxide (from the air) water (from the soil) It is chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy from the Sun, that enables plants to carry out photosynthesis.

12 Plants make GLUCOSE (sugar)
Some is used straight away as an energy source Some is converted to STARCH for storage! To prove a plant is photosynthesising we can test leaves for STARCH

13 What does this have to do with you?
Think of some foods that you like. Then think about where they come from. Can we trace them back to plants?

14 Word Equation You must learn this. Carbon dioxide Water Glucose Oxygen
Light Energy Carbon dioxide + Water Glucose + Oxygen Chlorophyll Raw materials = Carbon dioxide and Water Essential Requirement, Light energy and chlorophyll Products = Glucose and Oxygen Glucose is used by the plant or converted and stored as starch. Oxygen is released into the air for us to breathe.

15 What 4 substances required for photosynthesis.

17 Plants as Food Factories…
Summary Plants as Food Factories… With these ingredients I can make glucose then turn it into starch and save it for energy later! Menu Carbon Dioxide Sunlight Water YUMMY!! This process of plants making their own food is called Photosynthesis!
