6 Membership when community members feel they have a personal investment in the community and a sense of belonging. “They make you feel welcome and they actually like support you and you can tell them everything. They actually make you feel welcome like you are needed in this world and they give you pictures in your head ….(Females, FG, Middle School)”

7 Influence Influence What constitutes influence? How would we know the degree to which students have influence (particularly those who have not felt this sense of influence due to historical marginalization and disenfranchisement? What would it look like in our community? What would it feel like?

8 Influence power that members of a community exercise and power that the community will exercise over them (Vertical relationship). At [blank] you get to pick your own choices of what you want to do… You get to pick the subjects you want to work on first…you get to pick what you want to do there…it is not like you got somebody telling you constantly what to do. (Male, High School) …Let me pull you back here ‘cause, you know this is the way you got to go…So I need to get you straight….like, putting that hope back in, that hope that light (Female, Educator).

9 Integration and Fulfillment of Needs
What constitutes the fulfillment of needs? What would it look like in our community? What would it feel like?

10 Integration and Fulfillment of Needs
Mutual fulfillment gained from shared values, a satisfaction of needs, and exchange of resources (Horizontal relationship). …If you need help they try their best to help you. If they can’t they get somebody that can help… I feel like they love me. But yeah, I feel like they care… (Male, High School).

11 Shared Emotional Connection
What helps to promote an emotional connection? What would it look like in our community? What would it feel like?

12 Shared Emotional Connection
Shared dramatic moments, celebrations, and rituals. “At [blank], the adults are extremely attentive and strive to value each opinion and voice offered. Each morning we are engaged in introductions and the sharing of various facts about ourselves, where we want to live, visit, or inspirational quotes that inspire us. [The program] has this hominess about it, the “we are all family” feeling. They invite you in, tell great things to you... every moment they are there with you— guiding you along the way.” (Female, Adult Staff)

13 Reflection What is something you learned in this session that you plan to apply in your practice? How? What is something that you would like to learn more about?
