IgEs are transported in to the lumen. Upon challenge with food allergens, CD23a acts as a bidirectional IgE (co-)transporter which facilitates luminal-to-basal transport of IgE-allergen complexes. At the subepithelial side, food allergens crosslink antigen-specific IgEs on the surface of mast cell, to trigger release of mast cell mediators.
