One student said the following about the extract from The Great Gatsby: “The writer’s use of description makes Gatsby’s parties sound over-the-top and amazing.” To what extent do you agree? Which statement do you agree with the most? Justify your answer with evidence from the text. Stretch: Can you write your own statement? I agree to a great extent that the writer’s use of description makes Gatsby’s parties sound over-the-top and amazing. I agree to a large extent that the writer’s use of description makes Gatsby’s parties sound ‘over-the-top’ and amazing, however I also think the writer creates a sense of mystery that hints at something slightly stranger and more sinister going on. I agree to some extent that Gatsby’s parties are over the top and amazing, however throughout the whole extract the idea of worshipping materialism (greed for money) is also built up.
