1. THE BRIDGE PROBLEM
Four men need to get across the footbridge to catch the last train which leaves in under 16 minutes time. BUT there is a catch. The bridge can only hold 2 people. Because it is hazardous, the men crossing need a torch at all times, and to cross together at the speed of the slower one.
James can cross in one minute
Keith can cross in 2 minutes
Larry can cross in 5 minutes
Mick is very nervous and takes 8 minutes!
How can all 4 men get across the bridge in time to catch the train? The men have only one torch between them and it can only be carried by hand. It can’t be thrown.

2. James and Keith – 2 minutes
Keith returns – 2 minutes
Larry and Mick – 8 minutes
James returns – 1 minute
Total – 15 minutes

3. Mrs Smith wants to make 3 pieces of toast:
1 for dad
1 for herself
1 for Jo
She has a gas grill which takes 2 pieces of toast.
It takes 30 secs to toast one side of bread. How quickly can she make all 3 slices?
