DO NOW Make a list of everything you need in order to stay alive.
Date: 1/14/13 EQ:  What conditions need to exist in order for life to survive? Make a list of everything you need in order to stay alive.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:  What conditions need to exist in order for life to survive? OBJECTIVES: -Create a poster of a planet and demonstrate how that planet is able to support life. -Watch a video on life in extreme conditions.

HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY! Make sure your name is on it. Make sure you put it in your folder for safe-keeping.

PLANET POSTER TASK: You and your table mates have discovered a distant planet that you know can support life. Name your planet and draw it on your poster. Make a list of all of the parts of the planet that help to support life including but not limited to: -Temperature range -Length of a day -Distance to the nearest star -Landforms -Atmospheric gases, thickness -Water sources -Food sources Hardie and Hibler

VIDEO LIFE IN EXTREME CONDITIONS

DO NOW Date: 1/15 EQ: What effects do the characteristics of the solar system have on the ability to maintain life? What characteristics of the Earth make it possible for organisms to survive?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What effects do the characteristics of the solar system have on the ability to maintain life? OBJECTIVES: -Watch a video about the habitable zone -Learn about each planet in our solar system and determine which planets are habitable

TURN and TALK Where do you think the HABITABLE ZONE is in our solar system? Why? Be prepared to share.

VIDEO The Habitable Zone

PLANET STATIONS All As and Bs join the tables nearest the screen. All Cs and Ds join the tables furthest from the screen.

PLANET STATIONS -Rotate through 4 stations to gather information about 4 of the planets in our solar system. -Return to your usual table and be prepared to share the information you gather with the rest of your group. -Work together to determine which planets are in the habitable zone of our solar system.

QUICK WRITE Draw a simple diagram of our solar system and label where you determined the habitable zone exists. Write a brief explanation as to why you think the habitable zone exists where it does.

Let’s review ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
What effects do the characteristics of the solar system have on the ability to maintain life? OBJECTIVES: -Watch a video about the habitable zone -Learn about each planet in our solar system and determine which planets are habitable

DO NOW Date: 1/16 & 1/17 Q: What accommodations are necessary for manned space exploration? How does the position in a solar system determine whether a planet is inhabitable or not? Explain.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What accommodations are necessary for manned space exploration? OBJECTIVES: -Students will identify vital components needed for space travel.

Space Flight Part 1 In your groups: -Create a list of items you would need to bring with you to survive an extended trip on a spaceship into deep space. (Every student writes it down.) -Consider the needs of other forms of life that humans might bring along (for example, plants for food or medicine, animals for food or companionship, etc.).

MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Something has gone terribly wrong! Your spaceship has no choice but to crash land!! Using your sheet: -Decide on which planet or moon to crash. -Draw the planet our moon you chose to land on. -List the information you have about your planet or moon. -Include a separate list of items you have with you and why they will endure your survival.

Let’s Review ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
How do simple machines affect force when doing work? OBJECTIVES: -Students will investigate the effects of inclined planes on force and work.

DO NOW Date: 1/18 Q: What are some of the less obvious characteristics of Earth that help us survive? If you were to crash land on a distant planet, what are four things you hope would be there to help you survive?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What are some of the less obvious characteristics of Earth that help us survive? OBJECTIVES: -Watch videos and take notes on the magnetic field and ozone layer.

HOMEWORK Take out your homework…

Video-2 column Notes Take two column notes on the following videos: Magnetic Field Ozone
