2 New Divisions Republicans opposed- Spread of Slavery
Northern democrats were hurt by- Voting for the Kansas-Nebraska Bill

3 Election of 1856 Democrat Party split into-
Northerners and Southerners Democrats nominated- James Buchanan (PA Born) Why? He had not been involved in the Kansas-Nebraska Act

4 Election of 1856 Republicans nominated- John C. Fremont Why?
He opposed the spread of slavery Who won? Buchanan (Fremont lost support from slave states)

5 The Dred Scott Decision
Slave of an army surgeon from Missouri Sued for his freedom because- He argued that he had become free when he lived in free territory

6 Dred Scott Decision Key issues for the Supreme Court:
Was Scott a U.S. citizen or just a slave? Did his time in free territory make him a freed slave? Was the ban on slavery in parts of the Louisiana Purchase constitutional?

7 Dred Scott Decision Supreme Court ruled:
Concluded that all African Americans were not U.S. citizens Determined that Scott had not become free by living on free soil Declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional

8 Dred Scott Decision Who was happy and why-
White southerners thought it ended every issue about slavery Who was not happy and why- Northerners, feared slavery would spread
