1 Get out your outline to be checked.
DO NOW Get out your outline to be checked.

2 Purpose of an introduction
The introduction of a persuasive piece should serve three main purposes: first, it should catch the reader's attention; second, it should clearly explain what the topic of the essay is; finally, it should give the writer's position on the topic and mention the subtopics.

3 Writing an Introduction
Funnel Introduction Starts broad and becomes more narrow (like a funnel).

4 How to write a funnel introduction
The first sentence of the introduction should get the reader's attention. On the general subject – don’t need to say what the specific topic is. The sentence(s) should be more specific and serve as a bridge to your thesis.

5 Examples Being a teenager is hard; don't let anyone tell you differently. If 100 adults were asked, most of them wouldn't want to live through adolescence over again. Why not? There are too many things to worry about: friends, grades, careers -the list is endless. That's why it would be doing most young people a favor to give them one less major concern in life. Because it would give them fewer worries, and because it would save their parents money, students in public school should have to wear uniforms.

6 Technology is all around us
Technology is all around us. Teenagers are surrounded by it, whether they are texting, playing video games or editing photos on a computer. It only makes sense that students should also have the opportunity to use technology in school. Laptops in the classroom would improve student performance because students would be more engaged in their learning and students would have increased opportunities for research.

7 Bright, shiny trophies line the rooms of many children across the country. Are all of these kids superstar athletes? Not exactly. They received these prizes simply for showing up to practice. While this practice may not seem harmful, it can be. Parents and coaches should stop giving children participation awards because this practice will negatively affect their attitudes later in life and is especially harmful to children with low self-esteem.

8 Reviewing Citations Article with author: No author:
Human beings have been described as "symbol-using animals" (Burke). No author: We see so many global warming hotspots in North America likely because this region has "more readily accessible climatic data and more comprehensive programs to monitor and study environmental change . . ." ("Impact of Global Warming").

9 Multiple Authors: Indirect Quotes:
The authors state that tighter gun control in the United States erodes Second Amendment rights (Smith, Yang, and Moore). Indirect Quotes: Anita Ravitch, principal, argues that high schools are pressured to act as "social service centers, and they don't do that well" (qtd. in Weisman 259).

10 Other tips… Do not use “I believe or I think” Write in third person

11 Hand back CDW quizzes Remember: Warrant is MORE than just restating the claim or data! You are explaining WHY and HOW your data supports your claim.

12 Begin Drafting! Start with the “funnel introduction”
Follow your outline You can skip spaces… but you aren’t required to this time.
