Multiplying Monomials and Polynomials
Chapter 4 Section 4.5

Objective Students will multiply a polynomial by a monomial. Students will also multiply polynomials together.

Concept To multiply a monomial by a polynomial you may use the distributive property and the rules of exponents. You may multiply either horizontally or vertically.

Example x(x + 3)

Example -2x(4x2 – 3x + 5)

Example 5xy2(3x2 – 4xy + y2)

Example n(2 – 5n) + 5(n2 – 2) = 0

Concept To multiply a polynomial by another polynomial the distributive property may still be used. You just have to make sure that you multiply every term in the first set of parenthesis by everything in the second set of parenthesis. Once you multiplied every term together, combine like terms if necessary.

We know how to solve 2x(3x + 2) Now we have to solve (2x + 5)(3x + 2)

Example (2x + 5)(3x + 2)

Example 2x2 – 5x – 4 3x – 2

Example (y + 2x)(x3 – 2y3 + 3xy2 + x2y)

Questions

Assignment Worksheet
