1 The American colonies declared their independence in 1776, but King of England did not want to give the colonies freedom.

2 For many years, the British and the Americans fought a war
For many years, the British and the Americans fought a war. This war is the American Revolution.

3 In 1781 the colonies won the war.

4 The new country needed a government.

5 Representatives from the new 13 thirteen states had a meeting.
This meeting was called the Constitutional Convention.

6 These papers supported the Constitution.
The Federalist Papers were written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. These papers supported the Constitution.

7 In 1787, the representatives wrote a the Constitution
In 1787, the representatives wrote a the Constitution. The Constitution set up the government.

8 The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land.

9 The first words of the United States Constitution are We the People . . . .
“We the People” means that the US would be self-governed. This means the citizens would decide the laws.
