3 Literacy Framework This is the document from which we plan and is set by the government. It is made up of 12 separate strands and cover all four main areas of literacy; Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening. The strands highlighted in red are the strands which link to writing.

4 12 strands Speaking Listening and responding
Group discussion and interaction Drama Word recognition, decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) Word structure and spelling

5 7) Understanding and interpreting texts
8) Engaging and responding to texts 9) Creating and shaping texts 10) Text structure and organisation 11) Sentence structure and punctuation 12) Presentation

6 Literacy skills are hierarchical.

7 BIG WRITING Creativity is a vital part of learning literacy as being creative engages children’s interest. Making Literacy cross-curricular also engages their creativity and helps them understand how important Literacy is in everyday life.

8 Big Writing is the development of the ‘writing voice’ through fast, fun, lively and predominantly oral activities Pupils talk the ‘writing voice’ in a dedicated ‘Big Writing’ session & at other points in a week Based on the premise, IF A CHILD CAN SAY IT, A CHILD CAN WRITE IT

9 The Four Generic Targets

10 As children progress they need to extend the VCOP basics and encouraged to:
Select adventurous vocabulary for effect. Vary sentence structure. Vary sentence length. Add clauses. Select appropriate style for task. Use literary devices. Use wide range of punctuation. Vary tense. Proof read their own work. Join handwriting!!

11 The Punctuation Pyramid

12 BIG WRITING – The Method
In order to continue to raise standards and to raise the level of achievement for children in writing. We aim to develop their skills through a variety of teaching methods. The framework we will is applicable across all the writing genres and all the age groups in our school.

13 We aim to include some of the features below in a single lesson (big writing) but not all the features in every lesson. The Writing Process: Familiarisation and Talk for Writing (Exposure to many samples of a writing genre) Modelled Writing (Writing for the children) Shared Writing (Writing with the children) Guided Writing (Writing with/by the children) Independent Writing (Writing by the children)

14 Method continued Focus & text type could have been explored throughout the week as a lead up to the Big Writing session or it can act as a ‘stand alone’ piece of writing. First part of the session is where the stimulus is introduced and children have the opportunity to up-level ‘boring’ or ‘simple’ sentences. The task is introduced to the children and they are given planning and discussion time. The children then begin their writing and are given regular opportunities to ensure their work is covering the regular VCOP.

15 How do we start? We start with a stimulus, and this might be:
A book (fiction or non-fiction) Poem An excerpt from a film or book A photograph or painting

17 How does the picture make you feel? Think of an adjective.
If this was part of a storyboard what happened before? What is the person screaming about?

20 Grammar For Writing

21 Grammar Grammar underpins all of the key areas of Literacy.
Ultimately children need to speak and write, applying all the rules and conventions correctly, to communicate effectively. They need to be able to identify: nouns, verbs, adverbs, and many other terms. They need to be able to identify the first, second and third person in language. They need to be able to identify main and subordinate clauses- to mention but a few. There are clear expectations for each year group.

22 Spelling Punctuation Grammar SPAG Test
The SAT’s SPAG Test now thoroughly tests the children for their knowledge and understanding of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Spelling Punctuation Grammar

23 The spelling rules, knowledge and understanding of grammar and accurate use of punctuation has always been taught. The need to know the terminology has always been there but there is now more emphasis on understanding terms and applying them.

24 Spelling… Weekly spellings – important to support your child. Be aware of what they are learning so you can point out the spelling patterns when you hear them read.

25 A few words about spelling…
We teach spelling in a range of ways and we talk to the children about English spelling patterns not rules. Spelling rules don’t really exist in English so it is best to teach children general patterns spotted in English words. e.g. i before e except after c is not taught because of the number of possible exceptions.

26 Spelling… Time to play!! - make your own word search. - test the whole family! - spelling quest game.

27 How can I help my child at home?

28 Talk Start where they are at… What are they interested in? Exploit it!
Talk to them about it… Encourage them to have an opinion and express it giving examples to back it up. Make sure you stay interested be a good audience to them…

29 Find opportunities in everyday life for writing!
Thank you letters Lists Christmas and birthdays. s to relatives or friends.

30 Reading Fiction: Non- Fiction:
Just as important as fiction. Tends to be forgotten but is just important… Layout and content of non-fiction texts always assessed in government set tests. Reading books: Mr Gum, Roald Dahl, Jaqueline Wilson, collections of short stories.

31 Helping my child read… It’s not a chore if you fit in when it suits the family. If you get bored then have different books magazines and newspapers. Talking about what you read is just as important.

32 Happy tips… Great ways to help your child practice their reading…
Reading recipes and instructions. Read the web site of a film that they want to watch. A little every day helps with not only their reading but their spellings and writing.
