Chapter 10.2 Memory & Thought: Retrieving Information
Psychology
2
Retrieving Information
Recognition: Memory retrieval in which a person identifies an object, idea, or situation as one he or she has or has not experienced before (e.g. “Have you seen this?”) Recall: Memory retrieval in which a person reconstructs previously learned material (e.g. “What have you seen?”)
3
Recall Influenced by reconstructive processes Can become distorted
Confabulation- “remembering” information that was never stored in memory Let’s see how this might work: Testing memory If our reconstruction has gaps, we tend to fill in the gaps by making up what is missing Schemas Conceptual frameworks one uses to make sense of the world
4
Recall State-Dependent Learning Eidetic Memory:
The ability to remember with great accuracy visual information on the basis of short-term exposure “Photographic Memory” State-Dependent Learning occurs when you recall information easily when you are in the same physiological or emotional state or setting as you were when you originally encoded the information
5
Forgetting Decay Interference fading away of memory over time
refers to a memory being blocked or erased by previous or subsequent memories ex: trying to remember a new phone number when your memory brings up the old phone number
6
Amnesia loss of memory that may occur after a blow to the head or a result of brain damage may also be result of drug use or severe psychological stress infant/childhood amnesia is the relative lack of early declarative memories
7
Improving Memory Meaningfulness and Association elaborative rehearsal
linkin of new information to material that is already known remembering the six letters DFIRNE if arranged in the word FRIEND mnemonic devices techniques for using associations to memorize and retrieve information Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally for order of operations
