Algebraically with Substitution
Solve for one variable in one of the equations Substitute into 2nd equation Solve for the 1st variable to get one value Substitute answer in to get 2nd answer Check answer in both!

Elimination: Steps to Solve
Multiply both equations so that they have the same number with one pos and one negative Add both equations to cancel out one variable Solve for one unknown Substitute now known variable into one of the 2 original equations to solve for 2nd unknown Write a sentence stating what the 2 variables are.

Example 1 x = y, 5x – 4y = -2 Since first equation already has x = y, then sub into 2nd equation 5(y) – 4y = -2 Solve: get y = -2 Find x: Since equal x - -2 Check by substituting into each equation
