Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE Working Group. 3 IEEE-SA Standards Board Bylaws on Patents in Standards
Doc.: IEEE /0977r0 July 2005 July 2006 IEEE-SA Standards Board Bylaws on Patents in Standards 6. Patents IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard. This assurance shall be provided without coercion and prior to approval of the standard (or reaffirmation when a patent becomes known after initial approval of the standard). This assurance shall be a letter that is in the form of either a) A general disclaimer to the effect that the patentee will not enforce any of its present or future patent(s) whose use would be required to implement the proposed IEEE standard against any person or entity using the patent(s) to comply with the standard or b) A statement that a license will be made available without compensation or under reasonable rates, with reasonable terms and conditions that are demonstrably free of any unfair discrimination This assurance shall apply, at a minimum, from the date of the standard's approval to the date of the standard's withdrawal and is irrevocable during that period. Approved by IEEE-SA Standards Board – December 2002, Reaffirmed May 2005 Charles R. Wright, Azimuth Systems, Inc. Charles R. Wright, Azimuth Systems, Inc.

4 Inappropriate Topics for IEEE WG/TG/SG Meetings
Doc.: IEEE /0977r0 July 2005 July 2006 Inappropriate Topics for IEEE WG/TG/SG Meetings Don’t discuss the validity/essentiality of patents/patent claims Don’t discuss the cost of specific patent use Don’t discuss licensing terms or conditions Don’t discuss product pricing, territorial restrictions or market share Don’t discuss ongoing litigation or threatened litigation Don’t be silent if inappropriate topics are discussed… do formally object. If you have questions, contact the IEEE-SA Standards Board Patent Committee Administrator at or visit This slide set is available at Approved by IEEE-SA Standards Board – March 2003 (Revised January 2006) Charles R. 5 New Attendance Recording
July 2006 New Attendance Recording Harry and IEEE have been working on new attendance recording software Bookmark it It’s still under development! If this new server breaks, presumably we revert to the paper sign-in method However, it’s almost too simple to break!  Charles R. Wright, Azimuth Systems, Inc.

6 July 2006 Document Server There’s a local server that mirrors the documents on that’s updated every 15 minutes ftp://802server.events.ieee.org (the actual path is sometimes changed so log into the root) Please use this server for downloads to conserve bandwidth on our link to the outside world For document submissions, use the web interface on as per usual Do not use 802wirelessworld for anything but documentation No contact info, no attendance recording… It’s broken! Charles R. Wright, Azimuth Systems, Inc.

July 2006 Proposed Comment Resolution Process Propose to subdivide list of comments by, e.g., clause number and distribute to ad hoc groups Ad hoc groups should try to fix the “low hanging fruit” and defer on any comment that is contentious Longer than 10 minutes on comment means it is contentious (by definition!) Will reconvene on Thursday morning to assess progress Will continue on telecons to resolve comments Charles R. Wright, Azimuth Systems, Inc.
