Azure SQL Database Managed Instance
The best destination for SQL workloads in the cloud Focus of Conversation Move to PaaS with Azure SQL Database Managed Instance (MI) Lift-and-shift to MI for fully managed services that always runs on evergreen features, i.e. the end of End of Support SQL Modernize to Azure Modernize on premises SQL Server on premises Move to IaaS with Azure SQL VM Upgrade to SQL Server 2017 on Azure VMs, or Move “as-is” with SQL Server and Windows Server 2008/R2 and get 3 years of Extended Security Updates* for free For customers who experience EoS for SQL 2008/R2, they will have 3 options to upgrade to the latest version of our software to help reduce security risks and continue to get regular security updates. These are: Migrate to Azure SQL database managed instance (SQL Database MI) – PaaS option Migrate to Azure SQL VM – IaaS option Stay on-premise and upgrade End of Support offers for SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2: Extended Security Updates in Azure: Extended Security Updates for Windows Server and SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will be offered on Azure IaaS at no additional charge above the standard pricing for Azure Virtual Machines. For customers that migrate workloads to Azure Virtual Machines, we will offer Security Updates and Bulletins rated “Critical” and “Important” for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, and those rated “Critical” for SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2. For SQL Server, we recommend customers consider migration to Azure SQL Database Managed Instance. Azure SQL Database Managed Instance (preview) is a new service in Azure providing near 100% compatibility with SQL Server on-premises. Managed Instance provides built-in HA/DR capabilities plus intelligent performance features and the ability to scale on the fly. Managed Instance also provides a version-less experience that takes away the need for manual security patching and upgrades. Extended Security Updates for on-premises environments: Extended Security Updates will also be available for workloads running on-premises or in a hosting environment. Customers running Windows Server or SQL Server under licenses with active Software Assurance or Subscription licenses under an Enterprise Agreement enrollment are eligible to purchase Extended Security Updates annually for three years after End of Support (for 75% of the license cost). Customers can purchase Extended Security Updates for only the servers they need to cover. This offer replaces Premium Assurance. FAQ: What is Azure SQL Database Managed Instance? A: Azure SQL Database Managed Instance combines the rich SQL Server surface area with the operational and financial benefits of an intelligent, fully-managed service. Managed Instance is an instance-scoped deployment option in SQL Database that provides the broadest SQL Server engine compatibility, so customers can migrate their SQL Server databases without rearchitecting their apps. Managed Instance uses the new vCore-based performance tiers, General Purpose and Business Critical, providing the flexibility to choose compute resources, storage performance and high availability and making it easier to translate on-premises requirements to the cloud. Customers can also maximize their on-premises license investments for savings of up to 55% on Managed Instance with Azure Hybrid Benefit for SQL Server. SQL Database Managed Instance General Purpose is currently in preview and will be generally available in early Q4 CY18. The Business Critical performance tier is available for preview in July Designed for mission-critical business apps with high I/O requirements, Business Critical provides faster storage performance and supports high availability with the highest level of storage and compute redundancy. Upgrade on premises Upgrade to SQL Server 2017/2019 (and Windows Server 2016) * ESU worth 75% of license every year for the next three years after EOS

Three financial options for modernizing to Azure
SQL Server Modernize to Azure SQL Database or Azure SQL Virtual Machines Recommended Option A Use Software Assurance (SA) for Azure Hybrid Benefits (AHB) Use on-premise cores for vCores in Azure; Up to 4 vCores per 1 Enterprise Edition core Dual use rights up to 180 days One-click experience enabling AHB in billing Option B Server subscription for CSP customers (No SA required) SQL Software Subscriptions give customers the same benefits as Software Assurance All Option A benefits apply Flexibility to try out Azure SQL without heavy upfront commitment Option C License included (pay-as-you-go) for customers without SA Pay for what you use Azure IaaS customers (without SA) running on SQL Server 2008/R2 will qualify for free Extended Security Update up to three years For customers who decide to migrate to SQL in Azure, there are 3 purchasing models they can harness to implement the upgrade: pay-as-you-go, AHB and server subscription. Before going into how each purchasing model, let’s first take one step back and review the pricing mechanism for Azure SQL Database MI (PaaS) and Azure SQL VM (IaaS). For customers that move to Azure PaaS, the cost consists of 2 parts, the cost associated with SQL server and the cost of compute. For those who move to IaaS however, the cost consists of 3 major components: SQL server cost, Windows Server cost and compute reservation. If customers go with option 1 and migrate to Azure SQL MI: Pay-as-you-go (PAYGO): in this case, the customer will pay the full license included cost Access Azure hybrid savings (AHB) with SQL Software Assurance (SA): SQL SA will allow them to get SQL for free, and they pay for only compute cost. AHB allows customers to save up to 40% on their total cost. Server subscription: For customers without an SA, server subscription is just another way for them to access AHB savings. With server subscription, one can get SQL for free and get AHB pricing on compute reservation as well. If customers go with option 2 and migrate to Azure SQL VM: Pay-as-you-go (PAYGO): in this case, the customer will pay the full license included cost for Azure SQL VM Access Azure hybrid savings (AHB) with SQL + WS Software Assurance (SA): SQL SA will allow them to get SQL and windows server for free, and they pay for only compute cost. AHB allows customers to save up to 40% on their total cost. Server subscription: For customers without an SA, server subscription is just another way for them to access AHB savings. With server subscription, one can get SQL and Window server for free and access AHB pricing on compute reservation as well. SQL Save up to 88% vs. AWS RDS* SQL Save up to 46% vs. AWS RDS* Save up to 43% vs. AWS EC2*

Azure Migration Customer Momentum
SQL DB Managed Instance SQL DB Elastic Pools SQL DB Managed Instance “We determined Azure SQL Database Managed Instance was the best choice for us in terms of scalability, cost, and performance.… We’ve seen a 49 percent cost reduction and 25 to 30 percent performance gains. ” Nipun Sharma Analytics Architect, Business Technology & Systems “Now we have a single consolidated source of truth that everyone uses, and we can increasingly automate our analysis for a deeper dive... employees have data available on a daily basis, they can analyze it and better manage and move around inventory in response to market and customer needs.” John Steele General Manager, Business Technology & Systems “Azure SQL Database with Elastic Pools is a very convenient way to manage sharded or partitioned databases. We have a lot of experience with Oracle, PostgreSQL, and other databases, and they can be hard to manage in a sharded way. But with elastic pool, it’s very simple to share databases across a resource set.” Alan Wales Senior Solution Architect, Property and Casualty “Our on-premises solutions are expensive, and they’re good for complex, large deals, but they aren’t so good at handling fast transactions with low margins. We needed a very scalable, cost-effective PaaS environment, and that’s what Azure provided.” Jürg Staub Head of Tech Architecture, Property and Casualty Allscripts took advantage of Azure SQL Database Managed Instance to gain platform as a service (PaaS) benefits while taking a lift and shift approach. “We’ve already closed or moved three of our datacenters…It’s much easier for us to manage systems in Azure than hardware in a datacenter half a world away.” Peter Tomlinson Director of IS, Technology Operations “When we had an IaaS-based development model, we produced one solid product release a year…But with an Azure PaaS model, we enhance our product functionality quickly and continuously and give clients the flexibility to deploy small enhancements or not.” Jeff Brady Senior Program Manager, Azure Transformation

Azure SQL Database: ML-enabled DBaaS with best-fit engineering in mind
RDS (SQL Server) Azure SQL Database SQL 2017 Managed Instance Singleton Elastic Pool SQL 2016 SQL 2014 Evergreen with latest features, the end of EoS Intelligent performance and security improving productivity Built-in HA on a single node to save cost and effort Independent scaling of compute & storage for better perf/cost 99.99% SLA for all service tiers SQL 2012 SQL 2008 Table-stake PaaS: Managed VMs of versions of SQL Server released on-prem Backward compatible Limited surface area 99.95% SLA only on Multi-AZ Instance will face End of Support, no in-place upgrade Introducing Azure SQL Database Managed Instance SQL Database Managed Instance is an expansion of the existing SQL Database service designed to enable database migration to a fully-managed database service, without re-designing the application. It’s important to note that Managed Instance isn’t a new service – it is a third deployment option within Azure SQL Database, sitting alongside single databases and elastic pools. As part of Azure SQL Database, Microsoft’s fully managed cloud database service, it inherits all its built-in features. A SQL Database Managed Instance offers a simplified instance-scoped programming model that is like an on-premises SQL Server instance. The databases in a SQL Database Managed Instance share the resources allocated to the Managed Instance, and the Managed Instance also represents the management grouping for these databases. The emphasis of this offering is on high compatibility with the programming model of an on-premises SQL Server and out-of-box support for a large majority of SQL Server features and accompanying tools/services. Each standalone database is assigned a certain amount of resources via performance tiers: Basic, Standard, and Premium. The emphasis of this offering focuses on a simplified database-scoped programming model and applications with a predictable pattern and relatively stable workload. An elastic database pool is a shared resource model that enables higher resource utilization efficiency, and all the databases within an elastic pool share predefined resources within the same pool. The emphasis of this offering is on a simplified database-scoped programming model for multi-tenant SaaS apps. The workload pattern is well-defined and is highly cost-effective in multi-tenant scenarios. Fully backward compatible from SS2008 Full surface area Rehost (lift and shift) Rehost (existing apps) Rearchitect (cloud-born apps, incl. SaaS apps)

No multi-cloud, no inter-cloud
Demystifying Aurora AWS claims Aurora is… In reality… A proprietary, closed-source database Customers cannot port Aurora back to any community versions of OSS DB Open Source? SQL DB is priced within 5% of Aurora pricing w/AHB; discount on all replica Add’l cost on PITR*, each replica priced as primary for Aurora Low Cost? No ML-enabled perf tuning and insights Lack enterprise security e.g. TDE, DDM, Always-Encrypted, and no ML-enabled protection as in SQL DB Performant & Secure? Aurora charges additional costs under Backtrack, which is meant to provide fast and continuous Point-in-time-Restore to Aurora databases. SQL Database Hyperscale provide fast continuous PITR without additional charge, due to better architecture and use of RPBEX. The Aurora Lock-in: No multi-cloud, no inter-cloud Time-consuming and costly for SQL Server users Easy Migration?
