1 ETP 1700C Introduction to Electric Utility Industry Week 1

2 ETP 1700C Week #1 I would encourage everyone to take lesson notes, and draw diagrams. What topics will we cover in class during this first week #1? (Text book pages 1 through 4). We will start with safety and end with safety (Electrical safety). Course Syllabus. Course Text book. (How many have the correct text book for this class?) Student “externship” possibilities Summer 2016. “Voluntary” CDS Career Development Services each semester after regular class time hours. Class room rules and expectations. (dates and times, cell phones) Student attendance policy. My class room hours and availability. (1 hour before, and 1 hour after class). Learn cool stuff. Have fun!

3 ETP 1700C Week #1 Topics covered this week…
In class today, you will learn the following: We will begin and end with “Safety”. (Electrical safety) Week #1 discussion of Electric Power…what is electricity anyway? How do we use electricity in our homes, schools, and business’s? Name some things that electricity has made our lives better by. The “War of the Currents” between Edison and Westinghouse. What is the “Electrical Grid”? The “Grid” is made up of generation, transmission, distribution electrical equipment that connects one or more of the many electrical utilities together.

4 ETP 1700C Week #1 Electrical Safety in your home.
What are the hazards of electricity? What can you and I do to practice electrical safety in our homes? Know where your home’s fuse box is located, and make sure that it is easily accessible, and the circuit ID’s are well marked or labeled. Make sure your homes smoke detectors are working each month. Do not plug multiple / numerous devices into the same receptacle which could overload circuits in your home or business. Inspect electrical extensions cords before use.

5 ETP 1700C Week #1 Today we will discuss the following below…
What is electricity anyway? Where does electricity come from? How is electricity made? How do we in this modern world use electricity? Give me examples of electricity use in your homes? How are our lives made better through electricity?

6 ETP 1700C Week #1 Electricity is just one of many forms of energy we know of in this world. (Forms of energy can be Electricity, Heat, Light, Sound, Wind, Hydro, Nuclear, fossil, etc…) Electricity can be in the form of DC current, AC current, and static electricity. Electricity can be generated chemically, magnetically, thermally, and through friction. Electricity is a form of energy resulting from the existence of charged particles such as electrons.

8 ETP 1700C Week #1 Discuss basic principles of “Magnetism”. (Fields of magnetic flux) What does the term EMF mean? (Electro-motive force) What are natural magnets made of. When electric current flows in a conductor, it produces a magnetic field. When moving a wire through a magnetic field, a voltage or EMF is produced or “INDUCED” into the wire. How can we develop and make an artificial magnet?

9 ETP 1700C Week #1 Magnets and magnetism.

10 ETP 1700C Week #1 Let’s start with DC direct current electricity first. Who can tell me where at least one source of DC current (Energy) can be found and used? Can you name other sources for DC current? New electrical terms to learn are Volt, Amp, Ohm, and Watt. What does each of the preceding terms mean. Discuss “Water Hose” analogy for Volt, Amp, and Ohm. One way of describing DC current is by comparing it to AC current.

11 ETP 1700C Week #1 Ohms Law can be made easy with the power wheel diagram to the left, and applying the basic formulas for solving for either Volts, Amps, or resistance in Ohms.

12 ETP 1700C Week #1 Ohms Law basically states that current or amps is the energy being forced through a conductor by voltage or EMF pressure, and being restricted by Ohms or resistance in the wire itself impeding the flow of electrical current through the wire or conductor.

13 ETP 1700C Week #1 Describe AC current and how it differs from DC current. Discuss sine wave in general terms. How is AC current generated or produced? Discuss example of basic fossil power plant using Heat, steam, turbine, AC alternator that finally produces AC current. Does AC current have advantages over DC current? Does DC current have advantages over AC current? Which voltage / current did the Electric Utility World decide on and why?

14 ETP 1700C Week #1 Famous “Fathers” of electrical discoveries.
Discoveries made with electricity between A.D. Ben Franklin flying his kite in a T-storm discovered an electrical shock. Volta (Electric battery or dry cell) Coulomb (established guidelines for the measurement of electric current) Gauss (made discoveries regarding magnetic fields) Henry (made discoveries and calculations regarding inductance) Faraday (made discoveries and calculations regarding capacitance) Edison (Light bulb, phonograph, DC power generation and distribution commercially) Westinghouse (Transformer, AC power generation and distribution commercially) Tesla (Tesla coil, Transformer, 3 phase AC generator, 3 phase AC motors)

15 ETP 1700C Week #1 Discuss the “War of the Currents” with regard to Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. What type of voltage / current did Edison Promote and why? What famous invention is Edison credited with developing among many? What type of voltage / current did Westinghouse promote and why? What famous invention is Westinghouse credited with developing? What are the advantages and dis-advantages to AC current vs DC current? Ultimately, what type of voltage / current did the Electric utilities chose? When transporting voltage / current over long distances, which type is most efficient?

16 ETP 1700C Week #1 Let’s review what we have discussed in class now…
What is electrical energy? What are 4 new electrical terms we have learned regarding AC / DC voltage and current? What is the difference between AC and DC current. What is Edison known for? What is Westinghouse known for? What electrical current do modern electrical utilities use today?

17 ETP 1700C Week #1 Lab Experiment Exercise
Lab exercise to work with magnets, iron filings, and a compass. Students to use sheet of paper with iron filings on top, and magnet on bottom showing the lines of flux created by the magnet.

18 ETP 1700C Week #1 Week #1 quiz consisting of 10 questions Thursday afternoon. Study pages 1-4 in your text book in preparation for this Thursday. Week #2 reading assignment in our text book is page 4 through page 12 for week #2 next week.

19 ETP 1700C Week #1 Human Performance (Safety discussion)
As we close with safety at the end of this class, let’s discuss the following: Human Performance What is Human Performance? How are Safety and Human Performance linked together? How are they different? One example of Human Performance could be learning the acronym S.T.A.R. (Stop, Think, Act, Review).

20 ETP 1700C Week #1 Questions? Comments?
Please make sure you have a text book, and bring it to class with you every time please. What is next weeks’ reading assignments. ????
