The brothers Yamanaka The HOYA plant circa 1950 In November, 1941, the brothers Shoichi and Shigeru Yamanaka began producing optical glass in the town of Hoya, Tokyo. At the time, production of optical glass was one of the most advanced technologies in Japan. Seventy-five years later, HOYA has become a global business group with over 34,000 employees in over 100 subsidiaries.

Glass Disks for Hard Drives The HOYA San Francisco Office 1958 HOYA ventures into the eyeglass business with the manufacturing of lens press material 1970 HOYA opens its first U.S. office in San Francisco 1984 The company is renamed HOYA Corporation and shifts its main business focus from “glass” to “light (optics)” 1991 HOYA begins producing glass disks for computer hard drives 1962 HOYA’s first original lens, “NEO”, is launched and its UV protection and anti glare characteristics as well as a new curve design without comma aberration, are well received 1974 HOYA’s opens its first overseas lens manufacturing plant in Patumthani, Thailand 1987 HOYA launches it’s first intraocular (IOLs) lenses The HOYA logo in 1960

2001 HOYA launches HOYALUX Summit Pro and NuLux lenses that use EYRY, a high-index, plastic lens material. HOYA’s first soft intraocular lenses are launched 2008 The companies merge. HOYA now operates in three fields: Information Technology, Eyecare and PENTAX (lifecare and imaging) 2011 The company donated 100 million Japanese yen to assist relief and recovery efforts in communities affected by the earthquake disaster in Japan in March. Medical equipment and other products are also provided as needed 2007 PENTAX becomes a consolidated subsidiary of HOYA 2010 HOYA Healthcare Co. Ltd. becomes Eye Care Division of HOYA Corporation. The company now operates in the business fields of Electronics, Imaging, Healthcare and Medical. 2011 HOYA Employees worldwide donated 12.5 million yen to members of HOYA group and their families who were victims of the earthquake. The Company matched the donations by contributing the same amount PENTAX Endoscope

2015 SEIKO Xchanger 1st 3D printed wrapped, individualised Sport Frame with customized high curved lenses 2012 Eyeglass business expanded its direct presence in Brazil; 2014 Hoya completed the acquisition of a 50% stake in SEIKO Optical Products that became a consolidated subsidiary 2013 HOYA acquired eyeglass lens development and manufacturing business from SEIKO Epson Corporation; and acquired 30% of the shares of SEIKO Optical Products Co.
