2 Historical Context Career and Technical Education (CTE) now more appropriately called Career Education (CE) has historically been largely been regarded as separate and distinct mission of many higher education institutions, as many of the programs award terminal degrees or certificates which did not offer many students a clear pathway to continue their education beyond program completion.

3 Historical Context CE Programs Defined:
A program of study that involves a multiyear sequence of courses that integrates core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to postsecondary education and careers. Many of the Historical CE educational pathways historically ended at the Community College. Source:

4 Historical Context Many graduate level and baccalaureate level professions today, started as CE Programs in Community Colleges For example… Physician Assistants* Occupational Therapy* Physical Therapy* Respiratory Therapy* Dental Hygiene* Surgical Assistant* Radiography Technology* Paramedic * Medical Coding*

5 Navigating New Waters: Rebranding CTE to CE
The campaign aims to increase awareness of and enrollment in CTE programs as well as increase employer engagement with college workforce education and training programs. The research found that while general awareness of CTE among students and prospective students is decent, the knowledge and understanding of the program offerings and their potential benefits is extremely shallow. Locally: employers are looking for job ready individuals who have demonstrable skills day one, who are not theory rich but application poor. Employment opportunities are becoming more skills-based than degree based.

6 CTE and Transfer: Why? Why consider transfer pathways for CTE students? -some jobs require baccalaureate degree as an entry level criteria -career advancement -management positions -educational laddering -future educators - supports institutional performance objectives

7 CTE and Transfer: Benefits
Benefits to CTE program and host school -CTE students who transfer just as likely to complete baccalaureate degree as traditional transfer students -CTE transfers to baccalaureate program count the same as traditional transfer students -CTE students generally have positive impact on gainful employment numbers - Employment deferments to pursue higher have a positive impact on CTE performance metrics

Things to consider when looking to create transfer pathway for CTE students Program alignment* Articulation (goal is to minimize the loss of CTE units earned that will not count toward next degree) – team approach Education and informing students about benefits of advance education option

Focus on student success Students have various options to explore: public/private institutions Student and employer feedback on pathways is invited Concurrent enrollment and data sharing may be possible – allows CC access to real time data regarding matriculating students

Case Study: 1 Ms. M. completed holds a baccalaureate degree in business administration that she completed 3 years ago. Ms. M. has worked 3 different jobs in the last 3 years trying to gain critical experience necessary for a long term career. Frustrated and looking for career with better earnings with a specific marketable skill Ms. M. decides to enroll in a welding program at the local community college with the goal of becoming an underwater welder

Case 2: Mr. N. recently finished a bachelors degree in biology from a prestigious university. After 6 months of being unable to find a job, Mr. N enrolls in community college Health Information Technology Program which allows him to earn two certificates and a degree in two years. After the first year of the program he finds employment at $60K annually.

Open access of CTE programs to meet demands Increased blurring of the lines between employer needs: degrees vs. experience and employability Outcomes measures and CTE Need to make data informed positioned changes that result positive impact. Incorporation of CE courses into transfer degrees and GE courses into CE degrees Skills Training and Non-credit.
