On Monday a new pupil has started at the school and is in your child's class.  By Tuesday your child has been invited for a sleep-over at this new class mate's house for this Friday. It's a movie and games night. Your child is really keen to go and tells you  everyone else is going. Your child needs a reply by tomorrow What are you thinking and what would you do next? Would you say yes to the request , if not why and if yes why. What questions would you ask? Who is going to be there? Age ratings of the games and movie Bedtime? Food and drink? Supervision? It revealed the challenges that parents face in keeping up with what their children are doing online, with 48% believing their children know more about the internet than they do and 73% of children agreeing. However, just a year later the research was repeated and showed that gap in tech-knowledge between parents and their children is narrowing. It showed that parents had a greater understanding of the common social media platform that their children were using; parent had overtaken children uploading photos, videos and music online and the humble desktop computer was almost retired as 6 out of 10 parents turned to smartphones to go online.

12 The kids are watching you…
The kids will be watching how you use technology. Consider how you behave, be consistency in how you role model good behaviour Consider the following Turn off notifications to avoid that constant ‘ping’ Buy an alarm clock so you don’t have to have devices in the bedrooms Keep your phone on silent when you pick the kids up from school No phones at the table rule or no phones between 6-7 rule Consider what you post – do you get permission from your kids?

16 Key Messages Think of the internet as a place your child goes to - in their bedroom doesn't necessarily mean they are at home Role model - what does your digital behaviour look like to your child. Be clear on your family rules, limits and acceptable behaviour online.  They aren't necessarily the same as others. If you are not prepared to say or do it in the middle of Drumoak - don't do it online definitely more people will hear and see it
