1 An Angel in Coventry

2 There’s always been an angel at Coventry’s new cathedral…
St Michael This statue was created by Jacob Epstein for the new cathedral when it opened in It shows St Michael and the Devil. Michael is an archangel (and angel of high rank). He is mentioned 3 times in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. He is also mentioned in the New Testament in the Book of Revelation where he is leading God’s Army. He has a special feast day: Michaelmas on 29th September.

3 Another Well Known Angel
Another well known angel in the Bible is Gabriel. Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her she would have a baby and call Him Jesus and He would be the Son of God. It was a pretty important message!

4 What message is it bringing to us?
The Knife Angel One of the jobs given to angels in the Bible is to bring important messages, to make the people stop and think and wonder about God and the world we live in. The Knife Angel is a statue created by Alfie Bradley and made entirely out of knives that have been handed in to police. It has arrived outside Coventry Cathedral… What message is it bringing to us?

What message would you like to bring to your school, your town or city, the world? Photo Credit: Dean Wainwright Photography

6 A Prayer for Change Dear God, Sometimes we choose hurting each other instead of talking and listening. Sometimes we let the differences between us become a wall to separate us instead of a reason to celebrate us. Sometimes it feels like there is more pain and hurt in our world than there is love and forgiveness. Help us to take a moment to think about the message of the Knife Angel and about what we choose to do with our hands and our words. Amen

7 A moment for reflection
Use this moment to stop and think about the kind of world you would like to live in, the kind of world God would like us to live together in. Think about what happens when you fall out with others. Think about what happens when you are with people who are very different to you. Do you use your words and hands to bring peace? Wonder about different ways you could use your hands and your words for good, even for forgiving and reconciling (bringing people back together if they have fallen out). We can all contribute to building a more peaceful, loving world. Imagine!

8 Back in the Classroom… Take the image of the Knife Angel back to the classroom with you. Write your own message of peace and kindness to your school, town or city, this world. Write a poem or a prayer if you feel that is what you want to do. You can see the Knife Angel outside Coventry Cathedral until April 23rd.
